Fundamental Fluid Dynamics Challenges in Inkjet Printing

Detlef Lohse

Summary: This review provides an overview of the fluid dynamics of inkjet printing and discusses the main challenges for present and future research. The challenges on the printhead side include the flow inside the printhead, bubble entrainment, meniscus dynamics, wetting phenomena, and jet formation. On the receiving substrate side, challenges include droplet impact, merging, wetting, evaporation, and drying. Optimizing the process and materials as a whole is crucial for achieving efficient inkjet printing.

Competition between thermal and surfactant-induced Marangoni flow in evaporating sessile droplets

R. T. van Gaalen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between thermal Marangoni flow and surfactant dynamics using two numerical models. It is found that insoluble surfactants can suppress the thermal Marangoni flow if their concentration is sufficiently large and evaporation and diffusion are slow. Soluble surfactants, on the other hand, can either reduce or increase interfacial velocity depending on their sorption kinetics. The study also shows that a small concentration of insoluble surfactants can significantly decrease the tangential flow velocity at the interface. The numerical models are validated through comparison in cases where both are applicable.

Surfactant Driven Marangoni Spreading in the Presence of Predeposited Insoluble Surfactant Monolayers

Madeline L. Sauleda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spreading process of insoluble surfactants on the surface of a thin fluid film. The experiment showed that the deposited surfactant compressed the predeposited surfactant during spreading, and spreading ceased when the two monolayers reached the same final surface tension.

Patterns and Their Large-Scale Distortions in Marangoni Convection with Insoluble Surfactant

Alexander B. Mikishev et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of patterns near the threshold of long-wave monotonic Marangoni instability of conductive state in a heated thin layer of liquid covered by insoluble surfactant. It analyzes pattern selection between roll and square planforms and studies the dependence of pattern stability on heat transfer and gravity at different surfactant concentrations. Using weakly nonlinear analysis, a set of amplitude equations governing the large-scale roll distortions are derived for the linear analysis of modulational instability of stationary rolls.
