Biorefining of oil palm empty fruit bunches for bioethanol and xylitol production in Indonesia: A review

Sri Suhartini et al.

Summary: Indonesia's intensive agro-industrial sector generates a large volume of residues, with potential for conversion of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFBs) into bioenergy and bio-based products like bioethanol and xylitol. Techno-economic assessment shows potential for simultaneous production of bioethanol, xylitol, and lignin, with significant output to support the wider adoption of commercially viable bioethanol production in Indonesia. Challenges around technical, policy, and supply chains need to be addressed for successful implementation.

An Integrated Process for the Xylitol and Ethanol Production from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB) Using Debaryomyces hansenii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Efri Mardawati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) as a biomass waste for xylitol and ethanol production. Integrated microaerobic xylitol production and anaerobic ethanol semi simultaneous saccharification and fermentation methods were used. The results showed that OPEFB with high cellulose and hemicellulose content can be a valuable resource for sustainable production of biofuels and biochemicals.
