Cavitation Fibrillation of Cellulose Fiber

Jakob D. Redlinger-Pohn et al.

Summary: Cellulose fibrils serve as the structural backbone of plants and hold potential as a building material for a bio-based society. However, the mechanism of their mechanical release-fibrillation is not yet understood, hindering efficient production. This study investigates the cavitation treatment of cellulose fibers and found that derivatized fibers were significantly damaged, while sonication effectively fibrillated the fibers into nanocellulose.

The Effect of Different Vegetable Oils on Cedar Wood Surface Energy: Theoretical and Experimental Fungal Adhesion

Fadoua Bennouna et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of vegetable oils on the physicochemical properties of cedar wood. It was found that treatment with vegetable oils increased the hydrophobicity of the wood and also increased the electron-donor properties. The adhesion of fungal strains to the treated wood varied, with some strains unable to adhere to the surface after treatment with certain oils.

Effect of oxidation on cellulose and water structure: a molecular dynamics simulation study

Sathish Kumar Mudedla et al.

Summary: Enzymatic cleavage of glycocidic bonds is an important method to refine lignocellulosic biomass. This study explored the effects of oxidation defects on the structure and water interactions of cellulose {100} surface, showing that even single oxidations reduce connections within cellulose crystal and enhance water interactions. The findings also revealed different levels of soluble glucose fragments released during LPMO enzyme treatment on different cellulose species, indicating the significance of understanding enzymatic oxidation effects on cellulose nanocrystals and cleavage of soluble products.
