Knowledge, attitude and practice towards bio-medical waste management among healthcare workers: a northern Saudi study

Summary: This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice of healthcare workers in northern Saudi Arabia towards biomedical waste (BMW) management. The results showed that a significant portion of the healthcare workers had high scores in the three aspects. Older age and non-Saudi nationality were associated with higher knowledge scores, while healthcare workers in tertiary care settings had lower attitude scores. Male healthcare workers had higher practice scores, while pharmacists and lab technicians had lower practice scores. There was a weak positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores, and a moderately strong positive correlation between attitude and practice scores.

Prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Among Saudi Pilots

Summary: This study found that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is quite common among Saudi-based airline pilots and first officers, with 69% of the study population being diagnosed with OSA through home sleep testing. The majority had mild OSA (64%), while 5% had moderate and severe OSA (2.5% each). Additionally, one-third of the participants had insomnia, 33.3% had severe fatigue, 23.1% had excessive daytime sleepiness, 10.3% had moderate depression, and 25.6% had mild depression symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of screening for OSA in high-risk occupational groups like airline pilots and first officers, as well as the need to assess and treat secondary consequences like fatigue, depression, and insomnia early on.
