Blowing Snow at McMurdo Station, Antarctica During the AWARE Field Campaign: Surface and Ceilometer Observations

Nicole A. Loeb et al.

Summary: Blowing snow is an impactful process in cold climates, affecting regional thermodynamics, radiation properties, and the surface mass balance of snow. Despite its significance, blowing snow is poorly understood and not widely included in weather and climate models. A study at McMurdo Station in Antarctica utilized a variety of instruments and human observations to estimate blowing snow frequency and found an average annual range of 8.0%-14.0%, with the majority of cases associated with ongoing precipitation. Efforts to incorporate a laser disdrometer into the algorithm for detection were unsuccessful due to an unphysical dependence on wind speed, particularly at wind speeds greater than 10 m/s. The revised algorithm increased agreement with human observations and provided more confidence in the active occurrence of blowing snow at the observation site.
