Capped piston: A promising design to reduce compressibility effects, pressure ripple and cavitation for high-speed and high-pressure axial piston pumps

Qun Chao et al.

Summary: Increasing rotational speed and operating pressure can enhance the power density of axial piston pumps. Nevertheless, standard hollow pistons in axial piston pumps encounter issues like volumetric losses, pressure ripple, and cavitation at high rotational speeds and operating pressures. To mitigate these fluid-related problems, the capped piston design provides a promising alternative by minimizing dead volume. This study aims to elucidate the mechanism behind the improved flow characteristics of axial piston pumps with capped pistons. Computational fluid dynamics simulations demonstrate that capped pistons can notably diminish compressibility effects, pressure ripple, and cavitation across various operating conditions.

Optimization of the outlet unloading structure to prevent gaseous cavitation in a high-pressure axial piston pump

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method to reduce cavitation by changing the shape of unloading holes, which effectively redistributes the damaging power of cavitation. The crescent-shaped unloading hole design significantly improves the unloading rate and effectively decreases cavitation in the pump.

Derivation of the Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates applicable to the slipper/swash plate interface in axial piston pumps

Qun Chao

Summary: This paper derives a generalized Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates for the slipper/swash plate interface in axial piston pumps to account for the complex motion of slippers, evaluating boundary velocity conditions based on the kinematics of slippers. The new Reynolds equation considers geometric squeeze and centrifugal terms, along with a different form of Couette terms compared to traditional equations.

Experimental research on tribological characteristics of TiAlN coated valve plate in electro-hydrostatic actuator pumps

Jiangao Zhao et al.

Summary: Electro-hydrostatic actuators (EHA) demand high efficiency, high speed, and a wide range of speed from piston pumps, requiring the cylinder block/valve plate interface to function as both a bearing and a seal. By establishing friction coefficient equations and utilizing cermet coatings to improve friction performance, the study evaluated the wear status of TiAlN coated and nitrided valve plates. In a wide speed range of 500-10000 rpm, the TiAlN coated valve plate showed a decrease percentage of friction coefficient and a wear rate significantly lower than the nitrided one.

Analytical Harmonic Method for Modeling High-Frequency Oscillation With Applications to Aircraft Piston Pump Vibration Analysis

Lei Li et al.

Summary: Undesired oscillations in controlled systems can be effectively identified using the analytical harmonic model (AHM), which expresses oscillatory variables as harmonic kernel vectors and a position-independent harmonic amplitude vector. Experimental results on an aircraft pressure-controlled piston pump reveal that high-frequency SP oscillations are dominated by the fundamental harmonic component contributed by disturbance torque.
