Surface currents in operational oceanography: Key applications, mechanisms, and methods

Johannes Rohrs et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the physical mechanisms, observation techniques, and modelling approaches for surface currents on short timescales relevant to operational oceanography. The article addresses the fundamental difficulties in reliable measurements and the lack of consensus on the definition of surface currents. It distinguishes between four applicable definitions and discusses the challenges in synthesising observational and modelling data of surface currents. The paper concludes by evaluating the predictability of surface currents in an operational context.

Diagnosing Cross-Scale Kinetic Energy Exchanges From Two Submesoscale Permitting Ocean Models

Adekunle Ajayi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution and exchanges of kinetic energy at fine scales in the open ocean using two high-resolution simulations. The results show different behaviors in summer and winter, as well as complex dynamics of forward and inverse cascades in the ocean.

UNSUPERVISED RECONSTRUCTION OF SEA SURFACE CURRENTS FROM AIS MARITIME TRAFFIC DATA USING LEARNABLE VARIATIONAL MODELS

S. Benaichouche et al.

Summary: Space oceanography missions, especially altimeter missions, have improved observation of sea surface dynamics, but struggle with smaller spatial scales. A new unsupervised variational learning scheme converts AIS data into sea surface currents, showing significant improvements over current state-of-the-art methods through numerical experiments on real AIS datasets.
