XGT (X = Fe, Mn, Cr; G = Ge; T = Te): A family of two-dimensional ternary intrinsic magnetic materials

Yanyan Zhao et al.

Summary: By using high-throughput first-principles calculations, this study explores 2D ternary compounds of a transition metal (X = Fe, Mn, Cr), Ge, and Te, and identifies ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic XGT monolayer structures with practical magnetic transition temperatures. The coupling strength of ferromagnetism in XGT monolayers is related to the ratio of the transition metal element, while the band gap opening is affected by the occupancy of transition metal d states and the Te content. This work provides a unique perspective for designing compound functional materials and enriches the family of 2D magnets for technological applications.

HP - A code for the calculation of Hubbard parameters using density-functional perturbation theory

Iurii Timrov et al.

Summary: We introduce HP, an implementation of density-functional perturbation theory, designed to compute Hubbard parameters (on-site U and inter-site V) in the framework of DFT+U and DFT+U+V. The code significantly reduces the computational cost by using monochromatic perturbations with unit cells instead of computationally expensive supercells. HP is an open-source software distributed as a component of QUANTUM ESPRESSO and optimized to run on various platforms. It has been successfully used to compute Hubbard parameters for phospho-olivine LixMn1/2Fe1/2PO4 and accurately predict geometry and Li intercalation voltages.

Theoretical study of the crystal and electronic properties of α-RuI3

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the structural and electronic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional α-RuI3 material. The results show that α-RuI3 is a metallic material, unlike α-RuCI3. The strong hybridization between Ru 4d and I 5p orbitals decreases electron localization in RuI3, resulting in its metallic nature. These findings provide guidance for experimentalists and theorists studying two-dimensional transition metal tri-iodide layered materials.

First-principles study on the electric field manipulation of the magnetic property and the electronic structures for monolayer Fe2C MXene

Yan-Li Li et al.

Summary: This research investigates the magnetic properties, electronic structures, magnetic anisotropy, and Curie temperature of monolayer Fe2C through first-principles calculations. The study reveals that the electric field can tune the magnetic easy direction and decrease the Curie temperature. The findings provide a theoretical guide for reducing the Curie temperature of magnetic materials with high T(C) to room temperature.

Yan-Li Li et al.

Summary: By first-principles calculations, the ground state of monolayer Ti2N is predicted to be a ferromagnetic metal. Changes in lattice constants, magnetic moments, band structures, and magnetic anisotropy energy were investigated under an external electric field. The Curie temperature was estimated, showing a decrease with increasing electric field.

Defect induced ferromagnetic ordering and room temperature negative magnetoresistance in MoTeP

Summary: The study found ferromagnetic ordering in MoTeP, which is attributed to defect states and significantly suppresses magnetoresistance. A change from positive to negative MR at higher temperature is attributed to the dominance of spin scattering suppression.

Summary: In this study, a two-dimensional phase of chromium bismuthate (CrBi) is investigated using density-functional theory, revealing exceptional magnetic and magneto-optical characteristics such as high Curie temperature, anisotropic magnetic ordering, nontrivial Berry curvature, anomalous Hall effect, and polar magneto-optical Kerr effect. These findings suggest that monolayer CrBi is a promising material for practical applications in magneto-optical and spintronic devices.

Renormalization of gapped magnon excitation in monolayer MnBi2Te4 by magnon-magnon interaction

Bin Wei et al.

Summary: We developed a self-consistent renormalized spin-wave theory for two-dimensional ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 monolayer and studied the magnon spectrum, including magnon-magnon interactions at finite temperatures. Exchange anisotropy and single-ion anisotropy were found to be important in describing the monolayer MnBi2Te4. A significant renormalization of the magnon spectrum was discovered to be momentum dependent, especially near high-symmetry points, as the temperature approaches the Curie temperature. A notable increase in both the Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy was observed under magnetic fields, with energy gaps increasing significantly as magnetic fields increased. Our results align well with recent experiments, providing deeper insights into the magnetic properties of two-dimensional magnets.

Crystallographic and magnetic structures of the VI3 and LiVI3 van der Waals compounds

Thomas Marchandier et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional layered magnetic materials, such as the recently discovered VI3 ferromagnetic phase, have sparked great interest due to their unique spin dynamics properties, but incomplete understanding of their crystallographic structures remains a challenge. This study investigated VI3 crystal structures at low temperature using synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, revealing structural models for the two-phase transitions and questioning the establishment of a long-range magnetic structure. Additionally, the magnetic properties of the LiVI3 phase, similar to CrI3 in electronic and crystallographic structures, were examined, showing antiferromagnetic behavior and providing insights for a better understanding of magnetism in low-dimensional compounds.

Summary: The study extends the calculation of Hubbard parameters, including onsite Hubbard U and intersite Hubbard V, using the DFPT method, and generalizes the formalism from norm-conserving to ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations. Through benchmarking DFPT against conventional real-space Hubbard linear response, the effectiveness of the extended Hubbard formulation in determining the crystal structure and energetics of Li intercalation is demonstrated.
