Inverse Association Between Variety of Proteins With Appropriate Quantity From Different Food Sources and New-Onset Hypertension

Chun Zhou et al.

Summary: The relationships between the variety and quantity of dietary proteins from different sources and hypertension are still uncertain. This study investigated the associations between protein intake from major food sources and new-onset hypertension in a Chinese population. The results showed that there were U-shaped, reverse J-shaped, L-shaped, and reverse L-shaped associations between energy from different protein sources and new-onset hypertension, indicating that there is an appropriate level of protein consumption for each source where the risk of hypertension is lower. Additionally, a higher variety score of protein sources was associated with a significantly lower risk of new-onset hypertension.

Summary: The study found that greater dietary variety was associated with a lower risk of new-onset diabetes. There were different associations between intake of various food groups and diabetes risk, with some showing U-shaped relationships and others showing L-shaped relationships.

Dietary carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes: A nationwide cohort study in China

Chun Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found a U-shaped association between the percentage of energy from carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes, with the lowest risk at 49-56% of carbohydrate intake. There was an L-shaped association between high-quality carbohydrate intake and new-onset diabetes, and a J-shaped association of low-quality carbohydrate intake with new-onset diabetes. The findings suggest that consuming high-quality carbohydrates and substituting plant-based products for low-quality carbohydrates may help prevent diabetes.
