Rewiring host-microbe interactions and barrier function during gastrointestinal inflammation

Sune K. Jensen et al.

Summary: An organism's survival depends on a well-balanced immune system and the maintenance of host-microbe mutualism. The relationship between gut microbiota and host immunity is constantly challenged by opportunistic bacteria, which can lead to chronic inflammation and compromise organ function. Environmental stressors, such as dietary components, play a major role in gut inflammation and breakdown of immune tolerance towards resident gut microbes. This review focuses on understanding the relationship between host-microbe interactions, mucosal immunity, and the potential of nutritional intervention to improve barrier function and regain tolerance in inflamed mucosa.

Exploring the Triple Interaction between the Host Genome, the Epigenome, and the Gut Microbiome in Type 1 Diabetes

Duaa Ahmed Elhag et al.

Summary: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a complex interaction between the host immune system and various environmental factors. Recent evidence suggests that dysbiosis in the gut microbiota may play a role in the development of T1D, affecting gut integrity and leading to systemic inflammation.

Characteristics of the Gut Microbiota and Metabolism in Patients With Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults: A Case-Control Study

Summary: The gut microbiota and metabolites in patients with LADA show distinct characteristics compared to healthy individuals and patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with a severe deficiency of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. The gut microbiota structure of patients with LADA is more similar to patients with type 1 diabetes who are positive for GAD antibody.

Microbiome connections with host metabolism and habitual diet from 1,098 deeply phenotyped individuals

Francesco Asnicar et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome is influenced by diet and has significant associations with nutrients, foods, and overall dietary habits, impacting host metabolism and cardiovascular disease risk. Certain microbial species are indicators of favorable postprandial glucose metabolism, while overall microbiome composition can predict a range of cardiometabolic blood markers.

The gut microbiome modulates the protective association between a Mediterranean diet and cardiometabolic disease risk

Dong D. Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that a healthy Mediterranean-style diet is linked to specific functional and taxonomic components of the gut microbiome, and its protective effects on cardiometabolic health depend on microbial composition. In particular, the protective association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and cardiometabolic disease risk is significantly stronger among participants with decreased abundance of Prevotella copri.

Lysates of Methylococcus capsulatus Bath induce a lean-like microbiota, intestinal FoxP3+RORγt+IL-17+ Tregs and improve metabolism

Benjamin A. H. Jensen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that altering the protein source in diets can modulate the gut microbiota, leading to improvements in glucose regulation, reduced body fat, and diminished hepatic immune infiltration. Supplementation with Methylococcus capsulatus Bath lysates can enhance Parabacteroides abundances and upregulate regulatory T cell populations to improve immunometabolic homeostasis.

Bifidobacterium reduction is associated with high blood pressure in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Arun Prasath Lakshmanan et al.

Summary: Children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of abnormal blood pressure measurements. This study found that children with T1DM and high blood pressure had distinct gut microbial composition and unique metabolic pathways compared to healthy controls and T1DM children with normal blood pressure; a reduction in the abundance of Bifidobacterium may play a significant role in elevating blood pressure in pediatric T1DM subjects.

Zhiqiang Pang et al.

Summary: MetaboAnalyst version 5.0 has been introduced to facilitate comprehensive metabolomics data analysis and interpretation, with the aim of narrowing the gap from raw data to functional insights. Three new modules have been developed to assist in this goal, along with various other new functions and improvements in interface, graphics, and codebase. Users can now easily switch between compatible modules for a streamlined data analysis experience.

Insights from Bacteroides Species in Children with Type 1 Diabetes

Jose Matos et al.

Summary: Our study found similar numbers of Bacteroides species in T1D and control samples, with unique Bacteroides species and higher recovery of P. distasonis in T1D samples. Rep-PCR grouped different Bacteroides species but did not differentiate by origin. T1D children showed increased Proteobacteria and decreased Lactobacillus sp. All tested P. dorei, B. uniformis, and P. distasonis strains adhered to cells but showed differences in invasion ability.

Summary: Parabacteroides distasonis is the type strain for the genus Parabacteroides, a group of gram-negative anaerobic bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of various species. The genus, consisting of 15 species, has been associated with both beneficial and pathogenic effects on human health.
