Enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar cellulosic residue fractionated by a magnetic carbon-based solid-acid catalyst in the γ-valerolactone-water system

Qiong Wang et al.

Summary: A one-step pretreatment method involving the removal of hemicellulose and lignin simultaneously was developed, achieving high cellulose retention and removal rates under specific conditions. The reuse of the MMCSA-GVL system showed similar fractionation results, with enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of the pretreated residue. The study also analyzed the structural characteristics and enzymatic hydrolysis potential of the residue, providing valuable insights for efficient biomass conversion processes.

Highly selective delignification of poplar by hydrogen peroxide-ethyl acetate pretreatment at room temperature

Peiyao Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hydrogen peroxide-ethyl acetate (HPEA) pretreatment method was developed for the selective removal of poplar lignin at room temperature, while retaining a high percentage of the original carbohydrates. Compared to the traditional hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAA) pretreatment, HPEA pretreatment exhibited higher safety and stronger delignification capacity.

Mechanisms of bio-additives on boosting enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass

Chao Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that the cheap and biodegradable additives sophorolipid and whey protein can boost enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass by alleviating non-productive adsorption and blocking enzyme adsorption sites. Additionally, these additives can reduce the inactivation rate of cellulase under high shear and temperature conditions.

Green solvent pretreatment for enhanced production of sugars and antioxidative lignin from poplar

Yan Su et al.

Summary: The promising pretreatment using a biomass-derived deep eutectic solvent (DES) with choline chloride effectively removed lignin and xylan while preserving cellulose, resulting in a glucose yield of 75.8% under optimal conditions. The recovered lignin showed potential as a polyphenolic antioxidant due to its molecular weight, low polydispersity, and abundance of phenolic OH groups. Overall, this work demonstrated a biorefinery technology for the effective fractionation and valorization of lignocellulosic biomass.
