Vibrational Properties of CO Adsorbed on Au Single Atom Catalysts on TiO2(101), ZrO2(101), CeO2(111), and LaFeO3(001) Surfaces: A DFT Study

Ho Viet Thang et al.

Summary: The nature and local environment of Au single atoms supported on four different oxides were studied using DFT +U calculations, with CO as a probe molecule. The stretching frequency of CO, omega(e), was used as a fingerprint to determine the binding site of the Au atom. By considering various scenarios for Au adsorption sites, it was found that reproducing the blue-shift in the stretching frequency of CO adsorbed on positively charged gold, Au delta+, was challenging for DFT methods. A comparative study using different DFT functionals and accurate quantum chemistry methods was performed to propose a tentative assignment for the observed frequency of CO adsorbed on Au-1/LaFeO3 single atom catalyst.

Universal Principles for the Rational Design of Single Atom Electrocatalysts? Handle with Care

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: One of the objectives of electronic structure theory is to predict chemical and catalytic activities, which has become less complex with the use of single atom catalysts and graphene-based catalysts for electrocatalytic reactions. The rapid growth of theoretical studies based on density functional theory (DFT) and proposals of universal descriptors have provided guidance for the synthesis of efficient catalysts. However, there are still challenges in predicting catalyst activity, such as the accuracy of calculations, neglect of important contributions, and the physical meaning of proposed descriptors, not to mention reproducibility issues.

Single Atom Catalysts: What Matters Most, the Active Site or The Surrounding?

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationship between metal atoms and their surrounding environment in single atom catalysts (SACs). The numerical experiments reveal that changing the active site or the surrounding environment can lead to significant variations in catalytic activity. The implications of this conclusion for modeling studies of SACs are discussed.

Extendedtight-bindingquantum chemistry methods

Christoph Bannwarth et al.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

Dynamic Behavior of Single-Atom Catalysts in Electrocatalysis: Identification of Cu-N-3 as an Active Site for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ji Yang et al.

Summary: Atomically dispersed Cu-N-C single-atom catalysts with Cu2+-N-4 structure exhibit comparable activity and superior durability to Pt/C in the electrochemical reduction of oxygen. The dynamic evolution of Cu-N-4 to Cu-N-3 and further to HO-Cu-N-2 under ORR conditions is identified, with the low-coordinated Cu+-N-3 being determined as the real active site. The findings may guide the design of more efficient low-cost catalysts.
