Assessment of global health risk of antibiotic resistance genes

Zhenyan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzes 4572 metagenomic samples to illustrate the global patterns of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) distribution in diverse habitats. They quantitatively evaluate the health risk to humans of 2561 ARGs by integrating human accessibility, mobility, pathogenicity, and clinical availability. With machine learning, they map the antibiotic resistance threats in global marine habitats with over 75% accuracy.

Modulating the evolutionary trajectory of tolerance using antibiotics with different metabolic dependencies

Erica J. Zheng et al.

Summary: The evolution of antibiotic tolerance is closely related to the dependency of antibiotics on bacterial metabolism. Antibiotics that have minimal effect on metabolism are less likely to lead to tolerance. The cycling of antibiotics with different metabolic dependencies can interrupt the evolution of tolerance and increase the effectiveness of treatment.

mTORC1 activity regulates post-translational modifications of glycine decarboxylase to modulate glycine metabolism and tumorigenesis

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: mTORC1 signaling inhibits GLDC acetylation at K514 by inducing SIRT3 transcription, which impairs its enzymatic activity and affects glycine metabolism and tumorigenesis.

Establishment of a Biosensor-based High-Throughput Screening Platform for Tryptophan Overproduction

Yongfei Liu et al.

Summary: A high-throughput screening platform was established to identify a mutant strain with significantly increased tryptophan production, by improving its tolerance to harsh environments during fermentation. This strategy shows great potential for enhancing the production of other amino acids in Escherichia coli.

Metabolic network remodelling enhances yeast's fitness on xylose using aerobic glycolysis

Xiaowei Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of metabolic engineering, systems biology, and adaptive laboratory evolution was used to gain insights into how yeast rewires cellular processes to efficiently adapt to metabolic transitions from glucose to xylose. Through metabolic engineering, enhanced cell growth on xylose was achieved, with transcriptome analysis revealing involvement of multiple pathways in cellular reprogramming. Genome resequencing and reverse engineering identified key factors like SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling, osmotic response, and aldehyde reductase in improving growth on xylose, with glycerol-3-phosphate and xylitol identified as key metabolites affecting cellular adaptation.

Bacterial two-component systems as sensors for synthetic biology applications

John T. Lazar et al.

Summary: Two-component systems (TCSs) are a common family of signal transduction pathways used by bacteria to sense and respond to various stimuli. Synthetic biologists are repurposing TCSs for applications in different fields, with the potential to discover new inputs and develop a wide range of genetically-encoded sensors that respond to diverse stimuli.
