Fermionic Many-Body Localization for Random and Quasiperiodic Systems in the Presence of Short- and Long-Range Interactions

DinhDuy Vu et al.

Summary: We investigated many-body localization (MBL) of interacting one-dimensional lattice fermions in random and quasiperiodic models, with a focus on the role of interaction range. Our results revealed a qualitative symmetry between weak and strong interaction limits for short-range interactions, while for long-range interactions, the system was always many-body localized and similar to a pinned Wigner crystal.

Quantum gas microscopy for single atom and spin detection

Christian Gross et al.

Summary: Ultracold gases provide an ideal platform for studying many-body systems, with recent advances in quantum gas microscopy allowing for probing of collective quantum phenomena with single-site resolution. Versatile detection methods based on atom-light interactions enable tailored detection processes, including time-of-flight measurements and high-intensity absorption imaging. Quantum gas microscopes have not only revolutionized detection but also enabled control of lattice gases, leading to key experiments in the field.

Raman sideband cooling in optical tweezer arrays for Rydberg dressing

Nikolaus Lorenz et al.

Summary: Single neutral atoms trapped in optical tweezers and laser-coupled to Rydberg states provide a fast and flexible platform to generate configurable atomic arrays for quantum simulation. Raman sideband cooling can overcome limitations in experiments requiring continuous trapping, preparing the stage for Rydberg dressing in tweezer arrays.

Quantum many-body scars and weak breaking of ergodicity

Maksym Serbyn et al.

Summary: Thermalization is the inevitable fate of many complex quantum systems, but recent discoveries have shown the existence of a new type of behavior called quantum many-body scarring, where the system rapidly relaxes for most initial conditions, yet certain initial states display non-ergodic dynamics. This phenomenon, similar to scars observed in single-particles in specific potentials, has potential applications in quantum technology.

Dynamical obstruction to localization in a disordered spin chain

Dries Sels et al.

Summary: We investigate a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in a disordered magnetic field, utilizing the sensitivity of eigenstates and the low-frequency asymptotes of the spectral function to understand the system's behavior. We identify a region of maximal chaos with exponentially enhanced susceptibility, separating the many-body localized phase from the diffusive ergodic phase. This region exhibits slow transport characteristics, which we argue highly constrains any possible localization transition in the thermodynamic limit, suggesting an absence of the localized phase.
