Effect of Photodynamic Therapy on Halitosis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Pamella de Barros Motta et al.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness and safety of aPDT for treating halitosis. The findings suggest that the effects of aPDT on halitosis control are uncertain, and further research is needed.

The Effect of Mechanical Tongue Cleaning on Oral Malodor and Tongue Coating

Ha-Na Choi et al.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of mechanical tongue cleaning in reducing bad breath and tongue coating. The results showed that mechanical tongue cleaning significantly decreased the measurement values of organic bad breath and tongue coating. The choice of tools did not affect the reduction effect, indicating that the direction and method of wiping the tongue are more important.

Effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy with red led and methylene blue on the reduction of halitosis: controlled microbiological clinical trial

Ana Carolina Costa da Mota et al.

Summary: The study found that aPDT using a red LED and 0.005% methylene blue resulted in an immediate reduction in halitosis, but the effect was not maintained after 7, 14, or 30 days. No reduction occurred in the number of bacteria investigated at the microbiological level.

Oral hygiene associated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy or lingual scraper in the reduction of halitosis after 90 days follow up: A randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial

Sergio Santos Romero et al.

Summary: The study aimed to verify if oral hygiene behavior combined with aPDT or tongue scraper could reduce halitosis, but the results showed no significant decrease in halitosis after 90 days. Although halitosis remained above the threshold, the mean values were still 2-3 times smaller than baseline.

Treatment of halitosis with photodynamic therapy in older adults with complete dentures: A randomized, controlled, clinical trial

Katia Llanos do Vale et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using aPDT treatment is more effective in reducing halitosis in older people with complete dentures compared to tongue scraping, as it can lower the H2S concentration to socially unnoticeable levels and maintain this effect for seven days.

The association between halitosis and oral-health-related quality of life: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Luisa Schertel Cassiano et al.

Summary: Halitosis is associated with impaired oral-health-related quality of life, especially among adults. The relationship between halitosis and OHRQoL remains significant regardless of the assessment tools, methods, or cultural backgrounds.

Interdental and subgingival microbiota may affect the tongue microbial ecology and oral malodour in health, gingivitis and periodontitis

Abish S. Stephen et al.

Summary: Oral malodour is linked to periodontal diseases, with higher concentrations of volatile sulphur compounds found in patients with periodontitis. Differences in tongue microbiota were observed in relation to plaque accumulation, suggesting a potential connection between tongue and periodontal health.

Photodynamic Therapy for Halitosis: Could be Possible?

Cinzia Casu et al.

Summary: Halitosis, a common condition originating in the oral cavity, affects one-third of the population and impacts quality of life negatively. Measurement of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) at the oral level is useful for intercepting the problem. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) can be an effective treatment for oral halitosis.
