Microbiome analyses of 12 psyllid species of the family Psyllidae identified various bacteria including Fukatsuia and Serratia symbiotica, known as secondary symbionts of aphids

Atsushi Nakabachi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microbiomes of 12 psyllid species and found a variety of bacterial symbionts including unexpected lineages, indicating considerable interspecific transfer of arthropod symbionts. The findings provide deeper insights into the evolution of interactions among insects, bacteria, and plants, which may be exploited for controlling pest psyllids in the future.

Made for Each Other: Vector-Pathogen Interfaces in the Huanglongbing Pathosystem

Nabil Killiny

Summary: This review discusses the relationship between the citrus greening pathogen 'Ca. L. asiaticus' and its psyllid vector Diaphorina citri. It explores the molecular features of acquisition, growth, and transmission of 'Ca. L. asiaticus' within the psyllid, as well as its effects on the psyllid's energy metabolism, metabolic pathways, immune system, and other physiological impacts. The findings suggest the development of a mutualistic relationship between 'Ca. L. asiaticus' and its vector. This review provides insights for innovative management strategies.

Extreme Polyploidy of Carsonella, an Organelle-Like Bacterium with a Drastically Reduced Genome

Atsushi Nakabachi et al.

Summary: Polyploidy is a common phenomenon in different domains of life, referring to the state of having multiple copies of the genome within a nucleus or a cell. This study analyzed the ploidy of Candidatus Carsonella ruddii, a symbiotic bacterium found in the hackberry petiole gall psyllid. The results showed that Carsonella cells can contain thousands or even tens of thousands of genomic copies per cell, suggesting a potential role in DNA damage repair.

Diaphorin, a Polyketide Produced by a Bacterial Symbiont of the Asian Citrus Psyllid, Inhibits the Growth and Cell Division of Bacillus subtilis but Promotes the Growth and Metabolic Activity of Escherichia coli

Nozomu Tanabe et al.

Summary: A secondary metabolite synthesized by a bacterial symbiont of psyllids inhibits the growth of Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis but promotes the growth of Gram-negative Escherichia coli. This finding not only provides insights into the evolution of microbiomes in animal hosts but also may potentially be exploited to promote the effectiveness of industrial material production by microorganisms.

Uncovering Symbionts Across the Psyllid Tree of Life and the Discovery of a New Liberibacter Species, Candidatus Liberibacter capsica

Younghwan Kwak et al.

Summary: Sap-feeding insects in the order Hemiptera have close associations with obligate and facultative endosymbionts. Among psyllids, there is less known about the diversity and prevalence of their endosymbionts compared to other sap-feeding pests. Using 16S rRNA sequencing and high throughput metagenomic sequencing, this study identified low diversity of endosymbionts in psyllids, predominantly belonging to Enterobacteriaceae, and discovered potential new Liberibacter pathogen species. This study reveals wider diversity of associations between facultative symbionts and psyllids and suggests potential for further research on novel ecological, evolutionary, and pathogenic associations.

Vertical Transmission at the Pathogen-Symbiont Interface: Serratia symbiotica and Aphids

Julie Perreau et al.

Summary: Culturable strains of Serratia symbiotica, originally characterized as noncultured mutualistic symbionts of aphids, have been found to also have pathogenic properties in aphid hosts and can be maternally transmitted. This suggests a potential for these strains to evolve into beneficial symbionts in aphid hosts.

Potato Zebra Chip: An Overview of the Disease, Control Strategies, and Prospects

Victoria Mora et al.

Summary: Potato is an important food crop globally, but devastating diseases like zebra chip (ZC) have significant impacts on potato yield. Current management strategies mostly focus on chemical control and integrated pest management, which increase production costs. Potential sustainable control strategies for the future include using disease-resistant cultivars and integrated pest management.
