High-performance CoII-phthalocyanine-based polymer for practical heterogeneous electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide

Jirapong Luangchaiyaporn et al.

Summary: A new bithiophenyl-substituted Co-II-phthalocyanine was synthesized and electropolymerized to obtain polymer films for CO2 reduction. The polymer showed high efficiency and stability in producing CO with a Faradaic efficiency of 94% in a control potential electrolysis for 2 hours. The study suggests a metalcentered mechanism for the CO2 reduction process.

Operando Elucidation on the Working State of Immobilized Fluorinated Iron Porphyrin for Selective Aqueous Electroreduction of CO2 to CO

Xiaofei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was demonstrated that iron porphyrin-based molecular catalysts can achieve nearly 100% selectivity in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO in water. By combining in operando experiments and theoretical calculations, the presence of Fe(II) species as catalytic sites accommodating CO during the cathodic reaction was identified. Density functional calculations suggested that the ligand-reduced state with oxidized Fe predominates in the catalytic cycle prior to the rate-controlling step.

Activating the Fe(I) State of Iron Porphyrinoid with Second-Sphere Proton Transfer Residues for Selective Reduction of CO2 to HCOOH via Fe(III/II)-COOH Intermediate(s)

Sk Amanullah et al.

Summary: The ability to tune the selectivity of CO2 reduction by first-row transition metal-based complexes through second-sphere effects has promising implications. By understanding the mechanism of CO2 reduction by iron porphyrins and designing a porphyrinoid ligand, it was possible to catalyze the reduction of CO2 to HCOOH with high yield and low overpotential. The key role of a closely placed proton transfer residue in aiding CO2 binding to Fe(I) and stabilizing intermediates was elucidated through the reaction mechanism.
