Contrasting Role of Autophagy in Different Types of Cancer: A Review Toward Biomarkers and Therapeutic Improvement

Pallab Chakraborty

Summary: Autophagy is a major cellular pathway that plays a critical role in maintaining cellular energy homeostasis and producing building blocks. In cancer, however, autophagy can have paradoxical roles as both a promoter and suppressor of tumors, which could offer new resources for improving anti-tumor drugs in the future. This review aims to provide a brief overview of the autophagy process and explore its contrasting roles in different types of cancer, its significance as a prognostic marker, and its therapeutic implications for cancer treatment in the near future.
