Superconductivity in a quintuple-layer square-planar nickelate

Grace A. Pan et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of Nd6Ni5O12, a new type of superconducting nickelate material that achieves optimal cuprate-like electron filling without the need for chemical doping. The material exhibits a superconducting transition around 13K and displays behavior intermediate between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behavior. This indicates that square-planar nickelates are a new family of superconductors that can be tuned through both doping and dimensionality.

Phase Diagram of Nickelate Superconductors Calculated by Dynamical Vertex Approximation

Karsten Held et al.

Summary: In this study, the electronic structure of nickelate superconductors is reviewed, with and without considering the effects of electronic correlations. The results reveal that specific orbitals and an electron reservoir play key roles in the superconducting doping regime. Furthermore, the study finds that different physical phenomena can emerge under specific conditions, suggesting that different mechanisms may affect the occurrence of superconductivity.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

Yusuke Nomura et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite layer nickelates RNiO2 is intriguing, as they are isostructural to doped (Ca, Sr)CuO2 which exhibit superconductivity at about 110 K. Investigating the similarities and differences between these oxides will provide new insights into the mechanism of high Tc superconductivity in correlated electron systems. This paper reviews experimental and theoretical works on the new superconductor and discusses future prospects for the 'nickel age' of superconductivity.

Pressure-induced monotonic enhancement of Tc to over 30 K in superconducting Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films

N. N. Wang et al.

Summary: The successful synthesis of high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with a superconducting onset temperature Tc(onset) of approximately 17 K and the observation of Tc(onset) increasing to approximately 31 K under a pressure of 12.1 GPa suggest that there is still potential to further enhance the Tc of infinite-layer nickelates through higher pressures or strain engineering in heterostructure films.

Quantifying the role of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model

Xinyang Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of electron-spin-fluctuation coupling to the superconducting state in a two-dimensional Hubbard model using the dynamical cluster approximation. The findings suggest that only about half of the superconductivity can be attributed to the pairing mechanism involving spin fluctuations as pairing bosons in the standard one-loop theory.

Superconductivity enhanced by pair fluctuations between wide and narrow bands

Summary: This study demonstrates that doublon-holon fluctuations in systems with half-filled narrow bands can enhance superconductivity and increase the superconducting Tc. The coupling to the wide band allows the narrow band to remain superconducting and reach the largest order parameter.

Screening in a two-band model for superconducting infinite-layer nickelate

Tharathep Plienbumrung et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic properties of nickelates using a two-dimensional two-band model and finds that the screening effect plays an important role in driving the behavior of nickelates. Under weak screening, nickelates exhibit Mott insulating behavior with half-filled d orbitals, while under strong screening, they show self-doping behavior and tendencies towards d-wave pairing.

Stabilization of singlet hole-doped state in infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

Mi Jiang et al.

Summary: By studying (La, Nd, Pr)NiO2 system using an impurity model, the nature of the parent compound and hole-doped states have been explored by considering crystal field splitting, Ni-3d multiplet structure, and orbital hybridization. For the parent compound, Ni-3dz92 states are found to spread over a large energy range in the spectra and cannot be represented by a single orbital energy. Adding additional ingredients in the hole-doped systems can still result in the lowest-energy hole-doped state having a singlet character.

Nickelate Superconductivity without Rare-Earth Magnetism: (La,Sr)NiO2

Motoki Osada et al.

Summary: Through material optimization, a significant portion of the La1-xSrxNiO2 phase diagram can enter the realm of superconductivity, with a maximum onset temperature of approximately 9 K at x = 0.20. An unexpected indication of a superconducting ground state was also observed in undoped LaNiO2. Combining the results of different rare-earth elements in the NiO2 system reveals a generalized superconducting dome characterized by systematic shifts in unit cell volume and electron-hole populations across the lanthanides.

Orbital and spin character of doped carriers in infinite-layer nickelates

M. Rossi et al.

Summary: The discovery of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2 has sparked interest in the field, particularly regarding how the electronic structure evolves with hole doping. Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, researchers investigated the doping-dependent electronic structure and found that doped holes are mainly introduced into Ni 3d states. Comparing the data to atomic multiplet calculations, they concluded that the features observed in the XAS are consistent with a d(8) spin-singlet state in the 3d(x2-y2) orbitals.

Summary: Research on the bilayer Hubbard model has shown that robust s +/- pairing correlations exist in the model, especially in the large t perpendicular limit, when one band becomes incipient. However, this behavior is counteracted by a suppression of the intrinsic pair-field susceptibility and does not result in an increased critical temperature.
