Tunable strongly coupled superconductivity in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene

Jeong Min Park et al.

Summary: Moire superlattices have become a platform for studying correlated physics and superconductivity with unprecedented tunability. This study on magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene reveals a better tunability of electronic structure and superconducting properties than magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, with implications for the understanding of strongly coupled superconductivity. The results suggest that the system can be electrically tuned close to the crossover to a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, indicating the potential for revolutionizing applications of superconductivity.

Γ valley transition metal dichalcogenide moire bands

Mattia Angeli et al.

Summary: In this paper, a continuum theory of moire minibands in the valence bands of Gamma-valley homobilayers is developed, with benchmarking against large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations. Due to the emergent D-6 symmetry, low-energy Gamma-valley moire holes are found to differ qualitatively from their K-valley counterparts, with the first three bands realizing different models.

Electric field-tunable superconductivity in alternating-twist magic-angle trilayer graphene

Zeyu Hao et al.

Summary: By constructing a van der Waals heterostructure with three stacked graphene layers at alternating twist angles, researchers observed tunable superconductivity at a specific twist angle. The superconducting regions are associated with flavor polarization of moire bands and are bounded by a van Hove singularity at high displacement fields, indicating unconventional moire superconductivity.

Mott Insulating States with Competing Orders in the Triangular Lattice Hubbard Model

Alexander Wietek et al.

Summary: The physics of the triangular lattice Hubbard model exhibits a rich phenomenology, evolving from a metal-insulator transition to a spin liquid phase at intermediate coupling, and becoming a magnetic insulator at strong coupling. By combining different computational methods, researchers are able to elucidate the complex behaviors of this model, including entropy increase, the Pomeranchuk effect, and spin correlations at different coupling strengths.

Quantum criticality in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides

Augusto Ghiotto et al.

Summary: Metal-to-insulator transitions in twisted WSe2 exhibit strange metal behavior at low temperatures and Fermi liquid behavior at intermediate temperatures, eventually reaching an anomalous saturated regime near room temperature. This new platform allows for the study of doping and bandwidth-controlled metal-insulator quantum phase transitions on the triangular lattice.

Imaging local discharge cascades for correlated electrons in WS2/WSe2 moire superlattices

Hongyuan Li et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenide moire heterostructures provide an ideal platform for studying the extended Hubbard model, where long-range Coulomb interactions are crucial. A scanning tunnelling microscopy technique is described for sensing and manipulating correlated electrons in gated WS2/WSe2 moire superlattice, allowing experimental extraction of fundamental extended Hubbard model parameters. This technique enables imaging and manipulation of the charge state of correlated electrons at local moire sites.

Moire-Trapped Interlayer Trions in a Charge-Tunable WSe2/MoSe2 Heterobilayer

Mauro Brotons-Gisbert et al.

Summary: In gate-tunable 2H-MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayers, researchers observed a continuous evolution from a few trapped interlayer excitons (IXs) to an ensemble of IXs with both triplet- and singlet-spin configurations. Electron doping led to the formation of three different species of localized negative trions with contrasting spin-valley configurations. The study highlights the important role of exciton-exciton interactions and Fermi-level control in highly tunable quantum materials.

Flat band properties of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers of MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2

V. Vitale et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the electronic structure of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers, exploring the flat band properties and revealing the correlation between chemical composition, twist angle, and electronic band structure. Classical force fields were used to determine the relaxed atomic structure of the twisted bilayers, while a tight-binding model parameterized from first-principles density-functional theory was employed to calculate the electronic band structure. The highest valence bands in these systems were found to originate from either Gamma-point or K/K'.

Summary: This work comprehensively investigates the moire Hubbard model using a Hartree-Fock approximation, determining magnetic and metal-insulator phase diagrams and assessing the effects of spin-orbit coupling, inversion symmetry breaking, and tunable van Hove singularity. The study also considers the spin and orbital effects of applied magnetic fields, providing guidance for experiments and laying the groundwork for beyond-mean-field calculations.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic properties of half-filled narrow moire bands in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers, where correlation strengths can be varied by changing twist angles or interaction strengths. A phase diagram is constructed for the bilayer, identifying the metal-insulator phase transition and estimating the sizes of the charge gaps in the insulating phase.
