Guanzhong Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the emergence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and enhanced Gilbert damping induced by interfacial interactions in a heterostructure made of YIG and WTe2. The ability of WTe2 to enhance PMA in FM thin film, combined with its capability to generate out-of-plane damping like spin torque, makes it desirable for magnetic memory applications.

Chiral-Molecule-Based Spintronic Devices

Zixuan Shang et al.

Summary: The combination of spintronics and molecular chemistry allows for the manipulation of spin-related properties through the diversity of molecules, leading to the development of functional devices with molecular interfaces in information storage and processing. The discovery of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has shown that non-magnetic chiral molecules can generate spin polarization, breaking the dependence on magnetic materials. CISS offers advantages such as high spin polarization, excellent interface, simple preparation process, and low cost, making it a promising technology for efficient spin injection without the need for magnetic fields and ferromagnetic electrodes.

Critical role of orbital hybridization in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of magnetic interfaces

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors quantitatively establish the roles of orbital hybridization and interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) in the determination of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and propose orbital hybridization as a degree of freedom for the development of fast, dense spintronic memory and computing technologies. Through their study of the model magnetic interface Au1-xPtx/Co, they find that DMI, ISOC, and orbital hybridization can be quantified and tuned significantly at the same time by varying the composition of the Au1-xPtx. This research provides a quantitative framework for understanding interfacial DMI of various magnetic interfaces and establishes orbital hybridization as a new degree of freedom for controlling DMI.

Effect of chemical disorder on the magnetic anisotropy in L10 FeNi from first-principles calculations

Mayan Si et al.

Summary: This study investigates how deviations from perfect chemical order affect the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) in L1(0) FeNi using first-principles calculations. The authors analyze the local chemical environment of Fe atoms and find a specific nearest neighbor configuration that leads to higher MAE than the perfectly ordered system. However, a systematic analysis indicates only a partial correlation between local environment and MAE. The authors also find that increasing the Fe content can increase the MAE in the system.

Extraction of the chemical contribution to the interfacial magnetic anisotropy in Ni/Cu3Au(001)

Na Lei et al.

Summary: The manipulation of magnetic anisotropy via interface is essential for spintronics, but its mechanism is still under debate. In this study, we independently controlled the interfacial chemistry of a Ni film on Cu3Au(001) by inserting a thickness wedged Cu layer. Our results clearly demonstrate that the chemistry contribution of Au atoms at the Ni/Cu3Au interface plays a major role in its perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We provide a method to quantitatively separate and extract the chemistry and strain contributions to understand the mechanism and develop high-performance spintronic materials and devices.

Dependence of exchange bias and coercive field on Cu spacer thickness in oblique deposited Co/Cu/CoO multilayers

Bayram Kocaman et al.

Summary: The effect of growth-induced uniaxial anisotropy and thickness of non-magnetic Cu spacer between the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic Co/CoO multilayers on the exchange bias, coercive field, and magnetic anisotropy was studied. Results showed that increasing Cu thickness led to a decrease in exchange bias and coercive fields, with the presence of strong exchange bias across the thickest Cu layer at 10 K. The oscillatory behavior observed in the dependence of Cu spacer thickness could be attributed to the competitions between Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) and dipolar interactions.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the Fe/Au(111) interface studied by Mossbauer, x-ray absorption, and photoemission spectroscopies

Summary: The study investigated the origin of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy induced in the ultrathin Fe layer on the Au(111) surface using synchrotron-radiation-based Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It found that the PMA in the Fe/Au(111) interface originates from the cooperation effects among the spin, orbital magnetic moments in Fe, and large spin-orbit coupling in Au. These findings pave the way to develop interfacial PMA using p-d hybridization with a large spin-orbit interaction.
