Lower bound for entropy production rate in stochastic systems far from equilibrium

Domingos S. P. Salazar

Summary: We demonstrate that Schnakenberg's entropy production rate in a master equation can be lower bounded by a function of the weight of the Markov graph. This result is applicable to time-dependent nonequilibrium entropy production rates. Additionally, we prove a theorem in a general framework showing that the Kullback-Leibler divergence between distributions P(s) and P'(s) := P(m(s)) is also lower bounded by a function of the total variation of P and P', for any m. This finding highlights the connection between nonequilibrium thermodynamics and graph theory, and its potential applications.

Irreversible entropy production: From classical to quantum

Gabriel T. Landi et al.

Summary: Entropy production is a crucial quantity in finite-time thermodynamic processes, serving as a tool to extend thermodynamic considerations to nonequilibrium processes. Despite the lack of a unified theory for entropy production in general processes, progress has been made through frameworks like stochastic thermodynamics and quantum information theory. This has led to the development of a new generation of experiments addressing stochastic thermodynamic processes and the impact of entropy production.

Detailed fluctuation theorem bound for apparent violations of the second law

Domingos S. P. Salazar

Summary: The second law of thermodynamics describes the statistics of entropy production, with a potential occurrence of apparent violations. By utilizing the strong detailed fluctuation theorem, a lower bound for apparent violations of the second law can be established.

Improved bound on entropy production in a quantum annealer

Michele Campisi et al.

Summary: For a system described by a multivariate probability density function obeying the fluctuation theorem, the average dissipation is lower bounded by the degree of asymmetry of the marginal distributions. This lower bound is tighter than the previously known bound expressed in terms of the precision of the marginal, and can be saturated. Examples and experimental results support the theory's applicability in achieving accurate estimations of dissipation associated with quantum annealing.
