Cadmium isotopes in Late Ediacaran-Early Cambrian Yangtze Platform carbonates-Reconstruction of bioproductivity in ambient surface seawater

Jesper Allan Frederiksen et al.

Summary: This study contributes to the calibration of Cd isotope compositions in ancient shallow-water carbonates and proposes a combination with chromium isotopes to link bioproductivity and ocean redox condition. The results show variations in Cd isotope values in ancient seawater and provide insights into the environmental conditions during that time.

Stable isotope fractionation of cadmium in the soil-rice-human continuum

Sheng-Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: The analysis of Cd isotope ratios in soil, rice grain, and human urine samples from two Cd-contaminated regions in southern China revealed a preferential enrichment of heavy Cd isotopes from soil to rice grain and from grain to urine. The fractionation of Cd isotopes in the soil-rice-human continuum is likely due to processes such as partitioning between the soil solid phase and soil solution, as well as preferential enrichment by metal transporters in humans.

Cadmium Isotope Fractionation during Complexation with Humic Acid

Gildas Ratie et al.

Summary: Cadmium isotopes show preferential enrichment of light isotopes bound to humic acid, leaving heavier isotopes in solution. Fractionation of Cd isotopes at high ionic strengths depends on complexation with carboxylic sites, while at low ionic strengths, nonspecific Cd binding due to electrostatic attractions plays a dominant role in isotope fractionation.

Theoretical isotope fractionation of cadmium during complexation with organic ligands

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: Cd isotopes are an important tool to understand the geochemistry of Cd, with organic ligands playing a key role in controlling its toxicity and mobility. Calculations using density functional theory show that heavier Cd isotopes preferentially bind to oxygen and nitrogen donor atoms in organic ligands, while lighter Cd isotopes bind to sulfur donor atoms. This predicted equilibrium isotope fractionation will strengthen Cd isotopes as a process tracing tool in living organisms and enhance understanding of Cd isotope cycling in aquatic and terrestrial systems.

Cadmium Isotope Fractionation during Adsorption and Substitution with Iron (Oxyhydr)oxides

Xinran Yan et al.

Summary: Cadmium isotopes can be sequestered by iron (oxyhydr)oxides through adsorption and isomorphous substitution, with lighter isotopes preferentially enriched on oxide surfaces. The fractionation is affected by the distortion of CdO6 during adsorption and the transformation of minerals. Interactions with minerals can obscure both anthropogenic and natural Cd isotope characteristics, impacting the use of Cd isotopes as environmental tracers.

Equilibrium sulfur isotope fractionations of several important sulfides

Jixi Zhang

Summary: The study introduces the application of the volume variable cluster model method proposed by Rustad and colleagues in calculating sulfur isotope fractionations. By simulating sulfur-bearing aqueous solutions under different conditions, the results show that the order of beta-factors and sulfur isotope fractionation magnitudes of different sulfides are consistent with previous research.
