Metal adsorption by microplastics in aquatic environments under controlled conditions: exposure time, pH and salinity

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the presence of plastics in the environment, especially in the marine environment. This study aimed to evaluate the adsorption capacity of microplastics for different metals under different physicochemical conditions. The results showed that microplastics, specifically polyethylene and polypropylene, were able to adsorb metals in the aquatic environment, with adsorption rates varying depending on the exposure time, pH, and salinity. The findings suggest that microplastics could act as a potential vehicle for metal entry into organisms in the trophic network.

Heavy Metal Adsorption and Release on Polystyrene Particles at Various Salinities
