The Affective Border: Missing Migrants and The Governance of Migrant Bodies at The EU's Southern Frontier

Simon Robins

Summary: This passage points out the disregard of European states towards the issue of migrant deaths, resulting in a lack of data collection on the deceased migrants and the inability of families to know the fate of their loved ones. While living migrants are monitored and controlled by biopolitical regimes, once dead, they become insignificant and their families are ignored.

First strontium isotope map of groundwater in South Korea: applications for identifying the geographical origin

Woo-Jin Shin et al.

Summary: Strontium isotope ratios have been commonly used as a geochemical tracer, with the study finding the best interpolation method to create accurate prediction maps. The research showed that the radical based function including spline with tension was the most effective interpolation method. The resulting strontium isotope map can be used as a back-tracking technique to identify the geographical origin of unknown samples.

USGS44, a new high-purity calcium carbonate reference material for δ13C measurements

Haiping Qi et al.

Summary: The new high-purity, well-homogenized calcium carbonate isotopic reference material USGS44 is stable and effective for standardizing stable carbon isotope measurements, with a δ C-13 value of -42.21 +/- 0.05 mUr. It is useful for correcting linearity, adjusting isotope-ratio-scale contraction, and quantifying time drift.

Characterisation of new reference materials IAEA-610, IAEA-611 and IAEA-612 aimed at the VPDB δ13C scale realisation with small uncertainty

Sergey Assonov et al.

Summary: This paper describes the preparation and characterization of three new reference materials, IAEA-610, IAEA-611, and IAEA-612, aimed at anchoring the VPDB scale at negative delta C-13 values. The new materials have been produced with contemporary technical requirements and will help establish a consistent realization of the VPDB delta C-13 scale with small uncertainty.

Calibration chain transformation improves the comparability of organic hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope data

Sarah Magozzi et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method using stable isotopic compositions of animal tissues to infer geographical origin or mobility, and develops an algorithm to enhance comparability among different data sets. Results suggest ecophysiologically meaningful differences and offer a methodology to overcome challenges in geochemical data integration and reuse.

Mitochondrial DNA analysis of the putative skeletal remains of Sieur de Marle: Genetic support for anthropological assessment of biogeographic ancestry

Angie Ambers et al.

Summary: This article documents the discovery of seven burials in a Texas plantation that was originally a 17th-century Caddo Indian village in 1932. One set of remains unearthed from the seven graves, buried in a manner inconsistent with traditional Caddoan burial practices, has long been believed to belong to Sieur de Marle, a member of the French explorer La Salle's last expedition. Various investigations including cranial measurements, mtDNA sequencing, and discriminant function analysis support the European ancestry of these remains.

Mapping of spatial variations in Sr isotope signatures (87Sr/86Sr) in Poland - Implications of anthropogenic Sr contamination for archaeological provenance and migration research

Mateusz Zielinski et al.

Summary: This study presents the first isoscape maps of strontium isotope signatures in Poland, based on approximately 900 samples of various materials. The variation in Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios across the country is primarily driven by geological substrate diversity, influenced locally by anthropogenic contamination. The differences between the strontium isoscapes for geological substrate and surface waters are attributed to mixing processes and anthropogenic contamination.

Investigating a cold case using high-resolution multi-isotope profiles in human hair

Anaelle E. Fauberteau et al.

Summary: The study used multi-isotope hair profiles to investigate the travel and diet history of a human remains named Madame Victoria. The results showed stable diet and typical values of eastern Canada. The nitrogen isotope ratios suggested a rapid health deterioration, while hydrogen isotope data indicated a progressive movement towards Montreal over the last 3 years of her life.

Using bone bioapatite yield for quality control in stable isotope analysis applications

Lesley A. Chesson et al.

Summary: Stable isotope analysis of bone has become a routine method in archaeological science since the late 1970s for reconstructing an individual's life history. This study investigated bioapatite yield as an additional quality indicator for assessing bone quality. The research found a negative correlation between bioapatite and collagen yields in modern samples, but no correlation in prehistoric samples, suggesting preservation of one does not indicate preservation of the other.

Forensic isoscapes based on intra-individual temporal variation of δ18O and 206Pb/207Pb in human teeth

Laura A. Regan et al.

Summary: Isotopic signatures used in georeferencing human remains are influenced by spatial geologic and environmental processes, but temporal changes in isotope ratios should also be considered. Factors such as climate change, delocalisation of food and water sources, and changes in metal sources and uses impact the distribution of relevant isotopes. Analysis of isotopes in tooth enamel and dentin can provide useful information for forensic identification, but shifts in values may affect identifications if not accounted for.
