An Arabidopsis Oxalyl-CoA Decarboxylase, AtOXC, Is Important for Oxalate Catabolism in Plants

Summary: A novel enzyme, AtOXC, has been identified in Arabidopsis capable of catalyzing the second step in the proposed pathway of oxalate catabolism. Studies on an Atoxc knock-down mutant showed a reduction in oxalate degradation ability, resulting in increased accumulation of oxalate and the enzyme substrate oxalyl-CoA. The enzyme functions as a dimer and computer modeling identified key amino acids for cofactor binding and catalysis in the AtOXC enzyme structure.
