Association between oral microflora and gastrointestinal tumors

Xiaoxiao Li et al.

Summary: The oral cavity harbors a high density and diverse array of microorganisms, which have been linked to the development of oral, esophageal, and gastric cancer. Certain genera, such as Firmicutes, and species like Porphyromonas, have been associated with increased risk of these cancers. The production of carcinogenic substances, chronic inflammation, and altered cell metabolisms are proposed as mechanisms by which oral microorganisms influence tumorigenesis.
