Self-interactions can stabilize excited boson stars

Nicolas Sanchis-Gual et al.

Summary: This study investigates the time evolution of spherical, excited boson star models and demonstrates that large self-interactions can stabilize the excited states. The formation of these states is found to occur through the gravitational cooling mechanism, starting from dilute initial data.

Searches for Gravitational Waves from Known Pulsars at Two Harmonics in the Second and Third LIGO-Virgo Observing Runs

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: A targeted search for continuous gravitational waves from 236 pulsars using data from LIGO and Virgo did not yield any evidence, but presented upper limits on strain amplitudes and pulsar quadrupole moments. Among the studied pulsars, 23 have strain amplitudes lower than the limits calculated from spin-down rates, while for nine pulsars, their spin-down limits have been surpassed for the first time. Lower limits on strain amplitudes were also placed for dual-harmonic searches.

Universal relations for neutron star f-mode and g-mode oscillations

Tianqi Zhao et al.

Summary: Research has found that the f-mode and g-mode of neutron stars have different characteristics. The frequency and damping time of the f-mode are correlated with the compactness and tidal deformability of neutron stars, while the frequency of the g-mode depends on the properties of phase transitions. These findings are important for understanding and studying the internal structure and physical properties of astrophysical objects.

Gravitational waves and kicks from the merger of unequal mass, highly compact boson stars

Miguel Bezares et al.

Summary: Boson stars have been studied as simple models of compact objects and self-gravitating structures formed in dark-matter scenarios. The merger of two boson stars was investigated, revealing an asymmetric mechanism for dissipating angular momentum and potentially producing high kick velocities in remnant boson stars. Comparisons of gravitational wave signals between boson star binaries and black hole binaries were made to assess detectability differences with ground-based interferometers.

Ultralight bosons for strong gravity applications from simple Standard Model extensions

Felipe F. Freitas et al.

Summary: The study constructs families and concrete examples of simple extensions of the Standard Model that can yield ultralight real or complex vectors or scalars with potential astrophysical relevance. These extensions could lead to new non-black hole compact objects and new non-Kerr black holes within a certain mass range, linking them to the physics of compact objects.

GW190521 as a Merger of Proca Stars: A Potential New Vector Boson of 8.7 x 10-13 eV

Juan Calderon Bustillo et al.

Summary: GW190521 is a short gravitational-wave signal interpreted as a quasicircular merger of black holes, forming a remnant black hole with a mass of about 142 solar masses. Despite the lack of visible premerger emission, further investigation is needed to understand the pre-merger dynamics and nature of the colliding objects.

Astrophysical and Theoretical Physics Implications from Multimessenger Neutron Star Observations

Hector O. Silva et al.

Summary: NICER recently measured the mass and equatorial radius of an isolated neutron star, inferring information about its moment of inertia, quadrupole moment, and surface eccentricity. By combining various observations, including radio observations, the first theory-agnostic and equation-of-state-insensitive test of general relativity was implemented, setting a new stringent constraint on gravitational parity violation. This paves the way for future tests of general relativity using multimessenger neutron star observations.

Boson stars in Palatini f(R) gravity

Andreu Maso-Ferrando et al.

Summary: In the Palatini formulation of f (R) gravity, equilibrium solutions of spherically symmetric boson stars were explored. The study compared solutions of the quadratic theory f (R) = R + xi R-2 with those in general relativity, showing similar existence curves but significant differences for negative coupling parameters leading to repulsive gravitational components. Introducing self-interactions further emphasized the similarities between f (R) and general relativity, making observational discrimination between the two theories challenging.

Summary: The study shows that rotating scalar boson stars with m = 1 are always unstable, while adding nonlinear interactions to m = 1 boson stars may weaken this non-axisymmetric instability. Additionally, boson stars with m = 2 are unstable in all cases.
