Pedo-geochemical background and sediment contamination of metal(loid)s in the old mining-district of Salsigne (Orbiel valley, France)

Gauthier Delplace et al.

Summary: The mining district of Salsigne in France has a significant environmental impact due to high concentrations of arsenic and antimony in the soil. River sediments in the area are contaminated by past mining activities, especially showing high levels of arsenic, copper, antimony, and lead. These elements have enrichment factors much higher than other elements, particularly with arsenic levels reaching up to 1000 times the background levels in certain river sediments.

Contamination impact and human health risk in surface soils surrounding the abandoned mine of Zeida, High Moulouya, Northeastern Morocco

Oumayma Nassiri et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the levels of heavy metals in soils around the Zeida mine are elevated, posing potential risks to the health and ecological environment of the local residents. The tailings and their nearby soils showed moderate to high contamination potential, while the carcinogenic risk posed by heavy metal ingestion for both children and adults mainly came from Cd, Pb, and other metals.

Mining region value and vulnerabilities: Evolutions over the mine life cycle

Marie Forget et al.

Summary: This paper discusses how the value of a mining region is influenced by factors beyond economic benefits, such as geological, environmental, social, and cultural values. The changing values and vulnerabilities over the mine life cycle emphasize the complexity of territorial trajectories in relation to local governance and policies, and require integrative indexes to define different types of territorial values and vulnerabilities.
