Dynamic Signatures of Non-Hermitian Skin Effect and Topology in Ultracold Atoms

Qian Liang et al.

Summary: This study reports the experimental realization of a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm chain-non-Hermitian topological model with NHSE in the momentum space of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. Signatures of the NHSE in the condensate dynamics were identified, and Bragg spectroscopy was used to resolve topological edge states against a background of localized bulk states. This work paves the way for further research on the interplay of many-body statistics and interactions with the NHSE, advancing the quantum control and simulation of non-Hermitian physics.

Topology of multipartite non-Hermitian one-dimensional systems

Ritu Nehra et al.

Summary: The multipartite non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is investigated as a representative example of one-dimensional systems with multiple sublattice sites, revealing intriguing insulating and metallic phases with no Hermitian counterparts. The topology of these composite loops, characterized by multiple complex-energy bands encircling exceptional points on the parametric space, resembles well-known topological objects and can be quantified by a nonadiabatic cyclic geometric phase involving only the participating bands.

Summary: The authors introduce the skin effect discovered in a one-dimensional experiment and establish its universality in two and higher dimensional non-Hermitian systems. They also propose two new types of skin effect and show that systems with exceptional points exhibit the skin effect.

Engineering dissipative quasicrystals

Tianyu Li et al.

Summary: We discuss the systematic engineering of quasicrystals in open quantum systems where quasiperiodicity is introduced through purely dissipative processes. While the resulting short-time dynamics is governed by non-Hermitian variants of the Aubry-Andre-Harper model, we demonstrate how phases and phase transitions pertaining to the non-Hermitian quasicrystals fundamentally change the long-time, steady-state-approaching dynamics under the Lindblad master equation. Our work suggests a systematic route toward engineering exotic quantum dynamics in open systems, based on insights of non-Hermitian physics.

Detecting Non-Bloch Topological Invariants in Quantum Dynamics

Kunkun Wang et al.

Summary: Non-Bloch topological invariants have been dynamically detected in single-photon quantum walks, revealing their robustness against symmetry-preserving disorders and consistency with theoretical predictions. The experiments performed far from boundaries highlight these invariants as intrinsic properties of the system persisting in the thermodynamic limit, shedding new light on experimental investigation of non-Hermitian topology.

Programmable quantum simulations of spin systems with trapped ions

C. Monroe et al.

Summary: Laser-cooled and trapped atomic ions provide an ideal platform for simulating interacting quantum spin models. By using optical fields to modulate the ions' Coulomb interaction, long-range and tunable spin-spin interactions can be produced. This quantum simulator allows for the study of complex equilibrium states and dynamical processes in many-body interacting quantum systems.

Observation of Non-Bloch Parity-Time Symmetry and Exceptional Points

Lei Xiao et al.

Summary: PT-symmetric Hamiltonians play a significant role in non-Hermitian physics, exhibiting distinct phases and exceptional points. In the nonunitary quantum walks of single photons, a novel family of exceptional points beyond the common Bloch theory have been discovered, originating from the non-Bloch exceptional points and showing an intriguing connection with the non-Hermitian skin effect.

Non-Bloch quench dynamics

Tianyu Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the quench dynamics of non-Hermitian topological models with non-Hermitian skin effects using the non-Bloch band theory, and reveals the existence of dynamic skyrmion structures that are correlated with the non-Bloch topological invariants of the static Hamiltonians. The dynamic skyrmion structures anchor on fixed points and persist beyond certain conditions, providing a general method for detecting non-Bloch topology in the presence of non-Hermitian skin effects.

Topological aspects of periodically driven non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Vivek M. Vyas et al.

Summary: The study investigates the topological features of a non-Hermitian generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model driven by a periodic external potential, finding that the bi-orthonormal geometric phase acts as a topological index capturing the presence/absence of zero modes. The model exhibits trivial and nontrivial insulator phases as well as a topologically nontrivial Mobius metallic phase. Additionally, the driving field amplitude is shown to be a control parameter causing topological phase transitions.
