Polyols Induce the Production of Antifungal Compounds by Lactobacillus plantarum

Ruben Espinosa-Salgado et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the growth inhibition of the ochratoxigenic fungus Aspergillus carbonarius Ac 162 using 5 lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The results showed that Lactobacillus plantarum MZ809351 exhibited the strongest antifungal effect and produced compounds related to microbial antifungal activities when cultivated in the presence of xylitol and glycerol. Additionally, the addition of xylitol and glycerol reduced the content of Ochratoxin A (OTA) in the culture broth.

Biological Control of Collar Rot on Passion Fruits Via Induction of Apoptosis in the Collar Rot Pathogen by Bacillus subtilis

Yu-Hsuan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that Bacillus subtilis 151B1 and YBC have antagonistic activity against Fusarium solani PF7 and inhibit its germination. The broth cultures of these Bacillus strains reduced disease severity of Fusarium wilt on passion fruit leaves and enhanced seedling survival rates. The biocontrol efficacy of these strains may be due to the surfactins produced, triggering apoptotic-like cell death and interfering with the pathogen's energy metabolism.

Isolation, purification, gene cloning and expression of antifungal protein from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MG-3

Fen Yan et al.

Summary: The antifungal protein MG-3A was isolated, purified, and identified, showing broad antifungal spectrum and good stabilities to temperature, pH and protease K. The serine protease gene MG-3A was cloned and expressed in vitro, with highly soluble recombinant protein. Affinity chromatography was used to purify the recombinant protein and evaluate its antifungal activity.

Bacillus subtilis HSY21 can reduce soybean root rot and inhibit the expression of genes related to the pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum

Songyang Han et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that B. subtilis HSY21 isolated from soybean rhizosphere soil effectively controlled Fusarium oxysporum, a major pathogen causing soybean root rot, by inhibiting its growth and expression of pathogenic genes. This strain showed a high inhibition rate against F. oxysporum and could be a promising candidate for the prevention and control of soybean root rot.

IPM reduces insecticide applications by 95% while maintaining or enhancing crop yields through wild pollinator conservation

Jacob R. Pecenka et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the impact of adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) based on pest thresholds compared to standard conventional management (CM) on crops. The results showed that IPM can effectively reduce insecticide use, increase pollinator activity, and improve crop yields without compromising crop profitability.
