Micropearls and other intracellular inclusions of amorphous calcium carbonate: an unsuspected biomineralization capacity shared by diverse microorganisms

Ines Segovia-Campos et al.

Summary: A recently discovered biomineralization process in unicellular eukaryotes and prokaryotic organisms involves intracellular inclusions of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) called micropearls, which can be enriched with alkaline-earth metals. The processes, which are not fully understood, involve phylogenetically distant microorganisms.

Core microbial communities of lacustrine microbialites sampled along an alkalinity gradient

Miguel Iniesto et al.

Summary: The formation of microbialites is influenced by environmental factors, and the microbial communities associated with carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks vary across different lakes but exhibit functional stability. Specific bacteria and eukaryotes coexist in microbialites from different lakes, potentially playing important roles in microbialite formation.

Intracellular amorphous Ca-carbonate and magnetite biomineralization by a magnetotactic bacterium affiliated to the Alphaproteobacteria

Caroline L. Monteil et al.

Summary: Bacteria can synthesize a variety of non-biological precipitates with different chemical compositions and structures within cells, including magnetic particles and calcium carbonate granules. Research has shown that the amorphous calcium carbonate granules formed by these bacteria are contained within membrane-delimited vesicles. Analysis of a new genus of Alphaproteobacteria revealed atypical structure of the magnetosome gene cluster, and the bacteria consume energy to maintain an environment suitable for calcium carbonate granule formation.

The gammaproteobacterium Achromatium forms intracellular amorphous calcium carbonate and not (crystalline) calcite

Karim Benzerara et al.

Summary: The study on Achromatium cells revealed that the intracellular CaCO3 granules are predominantly composed of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), similar to other cyanobacteria and a recently discovered magnetotactic alphaproteobacterium. The physiological and ecological implications of this finding are worth further investigation. Future studies on the crystallinity of CaCO3 granules in Achromatium cells from diverse environments worldwide should be cautious of potential pitfalls identified in this study.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Microbial transformation of biogenic and abiogenic Fe minerals followed by in-situ incubations in an As-contaminated vs. non-contaminated aquifer

Martyna Glodowska et al.

Summary: Fe(III) minerals in arsenic-contaminated aquifers play a crucial role in the release of arsenic and resulting groundwater contamination through microbial reductive dissolution. Biogenic minerals exhibit better performance in Fe(III) reduction and arsenic sorption, but their impact on arsenic mobility remains unclear.

Organic Stabilization of Extracellular Elemental Sulfur in a Sulfurovum-Rich Biofilm: A New Role for Extracellular Polymeric Substances?

Brandi Cron et al.

Summary: This research highlights the crucial role of EPS in the formation and preservation of elemental sulfur biominerals produced by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting that organic encapsulation and metastable crystal structures are characteristic of elemental sulfur organomineralization. The study suggests that microbial EPS may be utilized by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria for the stabilization of elemental sulfur minerals outside of the cell wall as a store of chemical energy, indicating a potential new role for microbial EPS in biofilm energy storage that warrants further investigation.

Zetaproteobacteria Pan-Genome Reveals Candidate Gene Cluster for Twisted Stalk Biosynthesis and Export

E. Koeksoy et al.

Summary: This study identified a candidate gene cluster sfz for the biosynthesis and secretion of the stalk organic matrix through trait-based analyses of 16 Zetaproteobacteria isolate genomes. The cluster comprises six genes with functions in exopolysaccharide synthesis, cell wall synthesis manipulation, and carbohydrate hydrolysis. The study also revealed potential interactions between stalk-former unique transcription factor genes, sfz genes, and c-di-GMP in the regulation of surface attachment function of stalks during sessile growth.
