Effect of normal load on the frictional and wear behaviour of carbon fiber in tow-on-tool contact during three-dimensional weaving process

Ning Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of normal load on the frictional and wear behavior of carbon fiber by simulating the friction between carbon fiber and a tool during a three-dimensional weaving process. The results show that the coefficient of friction increases with the increase in normal load, and the tensile loss rate of carbon fiber also increases after friction tests.

Experimental simulation of bending damage of silicon nitride yarn during 3D orthogonal fabric forming process

Ning Wu et al.

Summary: This study examines bending damage behaviors and fracture mechanisms in Silicon Nitride yarn during the 3D orthogonal fabric forming process. The research shows that bending damage increases with higher weft density, fabric thickness, and yarn tension, resulting in decreased yarn strength. Additionally, the fibrillation length of the yarns mainly falls within the range of 0.3 to 0.9 mm.

Effect of weaving parameters on fiber structure of 3D woven preforms: A Micro-CT investigation

Zhi Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of weaving parameters on the fiber architecture of 3D woven preforms. Using micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) technology, two groups of samples were observed and analyzed. Deep learning algorithms were employed to conduct semantic segmentation of the Micro-CT images and create explicit models of different yarn systems. Two novel indicators were proposed to quantify the changes in weft yarn position and warp/binder yarn path. The findings clarify the micro-scale deformation mechanisms of 3D woven structures and establish the connection between weaving parameters and unit cell variations.

Summary: Three-dimensionally knitted technology textiles have great potential in industrial and technical applications. However, there are challenges in developing computational tools to predict the mechanical behavior of these textiles while keeping the computing cost low. Investigation of flaw strength distributions from tensile force-strain curves of fiber tows

J. Lamon et al.

Summary: The flaw strength data is determined through tensile tests on different fiber tow types, showing linearity between the p-quintile and flaw strength data from experimental force-strain curves, indicating flaw strength as a Gaussian variate. The Weibull distribution function is used to calculate the statistical distribution of data, which compares well with the normal distribution function. The significance of both normal and Weibull cumulative distributions of flaw strengths is discussed, as well as the theoretical material characteristic shown by the p-quintile vs. flaw strength relation.

Summary: This study established a mechanical model based on the mechanical properties of fibrous tows and their force of interaction with spools, which can help designers determine effective carrying ranges and predict the fiber mechanical behavior. The results of monotous and cyclic tensile tests showed that the maximum relative error of the mechanical model did not exceed 5%, indicating the model's reliability in predicting fiber behavior and assisting in achieving nonlinear control of fibrous tow transferring load.

Experimental and numerical analysis of textile composite draping on a square box. Influence of the weave pattern

J. Huang et al.

Summary: The draping of composite textile reinforcements on a square box was analyzed both experimentally and by numerical simulation. The feasibility of draping on a square box with a large depth depends on the weave pattern of the textile reinforcement, with characteristics such as tension, in-plane shear and bending playing a major role. Results from simulation approach based on stress resultant shell finite elements were in agreement with experiments, particularly regarding the development (or not) of wrinkling.
