Modular Link Level Simulator for the Physical Layer of Beyond 5G Wireless Communication Systems

Photonically Generated Millimetre-Wave and THz Links for Wireless Fronthaul and Backhaul

Summary: This article discusses the requirements for backhaul and fronthaul links in future cellular wireless networks and the potential role of photonically generated millimeter-wave and THz wireless signals for these applications. An experiment demonstrating photonically generated 50 Gb/s 16QAM wireless transmission at 182 GHz for backhaul and 7 Gb/s fronthaul at 31 GHz is presented and analyzed. A novel digital radio-over-fiber compression system is used for the fronthaul link, allowing 14 LTE channels to be transmitted within the 10 Gb/s line rate.
