Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced Wireless Networks: Two-Timescale Beamforming Optimization

Ming-Min Zhao et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a new two-timescale (TTS) transmission protocol to maximize the achievable average sum-rate for an IRS-aided multiuser system under the general correlated Rician channel model. The protocol optimizes the passive IRS phase shifts based on the statistical CSI of all links and designs transmit beamforming/precoding vectors at the access point to cater to the I-CSI of the users' effective fading channels with the optimized IRS phase shifts, significantly reducing channel training overhead and passive beamforming design complexity. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and evaluate the impact of S-CSI and channel correlation on the system performance.

Overhead-Aware Design of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Smart Radio Environments

Alessio Zappone et al.

Summary: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces have emerged as a promising technology for future wireless networks, but a major challenge is the overhead required for channel state information estimation and optimized phase shift reporting. This study introduces an overhead-aware resource allocation framework for wireless networks using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, optimizing system rate and energy efficiency with respect to various parameters while investigating the trade-off between optimized radio resource allocation policies and related overhead.

ADMM Based Channel Estimation for RISs Aided Millimeter Wave Communications

Heng Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an ADMM-based channel estimation method to improve CSI estimation accuracy and reduce training overhead in RIS-aided millimeter wave communication systems. By converting the channel matrix into a sparse matrix recovery problem, the ADMM algorithm leverages both low rank and sparsity properties to solve the problem. Simulation results show that the proposed ADMM algorithm significantly increases channel estimation accuracy and reduces training overhead compared to competing algorithms.
