Global distribution of the South American peacock basses Cichla spp. follows human interference

Ana Clara Sampaio Franco et al.

Summary: The study found that South American peacock basses have been widely introduced globally, especially in tropical and subtropical ecoregions, with reservoirs playing a key role as the main introduction pathway. The difference in distribution between native and non-native ranges affects population records, with the number of reservoirs positively correlated with non-native population records.

When a freshwater invader meets the estuary: the peacock bass and fish assemblages in the Sao Joao River, Brazil

Paula Araujo Catelani et al.

Summary: Peacock basses, originally from the Amazon basin, have been introduced to different parts of the world. A study conducted in the estuarine section of the Sao Joao River in southeastern Brazil analyzed the spatial and temporal variations in catch of C. kelberi and fish assemblage structure, finding that abiotic variables, including salinity gradient, affect their distribution. The study recorded a total of 81 fish species, with nine non-native species, making up 33.4% of the total catch.

The invasion of an alien characiform fish and the decline of a native congener in a Neotropical river-floodplain system

Maria Julia Mileo Ganassin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed trends in abundance of two characiform fishes in the upper Parana River and its floodplain over a long time series, finding a marked decline in the native species S. altoparanae which was significantly correlated with the abundance of the invasive species S. borellii. Competitive interactions may have contributed to the decline of the native species.
