Manufacturing, characterization and experimental investigation of the IPMC shoe energy harvester

Satya Narayan Patel et al.

Summary: This study fabricated a human shoe energy harvester based on ionic polymer metal composite and tested its voltage and power output under different electrical connections and mechanical excitations. The results showed that under specific conditions, the harvester could generate a certain voltage and power, but the output decreased as the excitation frequency increased.

Modeling actuation and sensing in ionic polymer metal composites by electrochemo-poromechanics

Alessandro Leronni et al.

Summary: IPMCs are electroactive polymeric membranes with metal electrodes, promising for applications in soft robotics and biomedicine. A large deformation theory combining electrochemistry and poromechanics has been proposed for a comprehensive understanding of IPMC multiphysics, which involves ion motion in a solvent within the membrane.

Ionic polymer metal composite compression sensors with 3D-structured interfaces

Rebecca Histed et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of tailored 3D-structured polymer-metal interfaces to create enhanced eIPMC sensors for soft, self-powered, high sensitivity strain sensor applications. Through advanced additive manufacturing and minimal physics-based chemoelectromechanical models, the eIPMC sensors demonstrate improved electrochemical properties and compression sensing performance. Alternative fabrication methods such as filament-based fused-deposition manufacturing and stencil printing also show enhanced sensing performance against traditional IPMC sensors.

Molecular dynamics of ionic polymer-metal composites

A. Truszkowska et al.

Summary: Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) are a promising class of soft, active materials with potential for a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. Understanding the physical phenomena at the atomic level is crucial for realizing the full potential of IPMCs, and simulations at the atomistic scale can provide valuable insights into their behavior and characteristics. By analyzing counterions migration and pile-up under an electric field, this study identifies mechanisms for stress generation in IPMCs, offering new insights into their actuation and sensing capabilities.

Asymptotic analysis of compression sensing in ionic polymer metal composites: The role of interphase regions with variable properties

Valentina Volpini et al.

Summary: This study focused on the compression sensing of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs), paying particular attention to the significant impact of Composite Layers (CLs) on the electrochemical properties. By integrating the governing system of partial differential equations in multiple regions and using the perturbative method of matched asymptotic expansions, an equivalent circuit model for IPMC was established to elucidate its sensing behavior characteristics, and the sensitivity of IPMC sensing behavior to CLs was evaluated.
