Retinal Ganglion Cells-Diversity of Cell Types and Clinical Relevance

Ungsoo Samuel Kim et al.

Summary: Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are a diverse group with unique morphological features, functions, and pathways. Studies have revealed insights into the selective vulnerability and relative resilience of different RGC subtypes, which are crucial for developing targeted therapies for optic neuropathies. The comprehensive description of RGC diversity and potential therapeutic pathways provides hope for effective treatments for patients with these progressive blinding diseases.

Early Identification of Retinal Neuropathy in Subclinical Diabetic Eyes by Reduced Birefringence of the Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer

Andreas Pollreisz et al.

Summary: This study used spectral-domain polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography to study the birefringence of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in diabetic eyes without clinical signs of retinopathy or with mild to moderate DR stages. The results showed significantly reduced birefringence values in diabetic eyes compared to healthy controls, indicating early neuroretinal alterations before the appearance of clinical microvascular lesions or ganglion cell complex alterations.
