Antioxidant Defenses in the Human Eye: A Focus on Metallothioneins

Ana Alvarez-Barrios et al.

Summary: The human eye is greatly affected by both internal and external oxidants, leading to oxidative stress and potential eye diseases. Metallothioneins (MTs) are a family of proteins with antioxidant properties and cell-mediated functions that play a crucial role in capturing and neutralizing free radicals in the eye.

Bioelectric signaling: Reprogrammable circuits underlying embryogenesis, regeneration, and cancer

Michael Levin

Summary: Recent advancements in analyzing developmental bioelectric circuits and channelopathies have shed light on the cooperation of cellular collectives towards achieving organ-level structural order. These progressions open up possibilities for utilizing bioelectric signaling in interventions related to developmental disorders, regenerative medicine, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic bioengineering.

Taurine rescues mitochondria-related metabolic impairments in the patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the retinal pigment epithelium

Kohei Homma et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial dysfunction in MELAS patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells resulted in impaired proliferation and survival when glycolysis was inhibited, which was rescued by taurine treatment. Metabolomic analysis revealed oxidative stress and EMT in the retinal pigment epithelium differentiated from MELAS iPSCs, both of which were alleviated by taurine. Therefore, taurine may serve as a potential therapeutic approach for mitochondrial-related retinal diseases.

Cytotoxic effects of alteplase, a recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, on human retinal pigment epithelial cells

Shuhei Kimura et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the cytotoxic effects of alteplase and its additives on human retinal pigment epithelial cells, showing that alteplase can reduce cell viability in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, with L-arginine being a possible causative factor.
