Summary: This study develops multiple machine learning models and optimization algorithms to predict groundwater levels. The committee machine intelligence system (CMIS) model demonstrates high accuracy in predicting groundwater levels. Sensitivity analysis identifies the electrical resistivity of sediments as the most influential factor on groundwater levels.

Three decades of depth-dependent groundwater response to climate variability and human regime in the transboundary Indus-Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna mega river basin aquifers

Pragnaditya Malakar et al.

Summary: This study attributed the impact of local precipitation, global climate cycles, and human influence on multi-depth groundwater levels in the IGBM over a period of 30 years using statistical analysis methods. The results revealed variable phase lags between groundwater levels and precipitation in different parts of the basin, as well as the dominant influence of groundwater abstraction in most areas, particularly at greater depths of the aquifer.

Machine-learning-based regional-scale groundwater level prediction using GRACE

Pragnaditya Malakar et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the spatial and subsurface variability in groundwater level prediction in the IGBM, determine its relationship with groundwater abstraction, and outline the advantages and limitations of using GRACE data for predicting GWLAs. The findings show significant prediction efficiency in most areas of the IGBM, but hotspots with poor model performance are identified in agriculture-intensive regions. Further analysis reveals that deeper pumping in the aquifer is linked to poor model performance for deep observation wells, highlighting the limitations of GRACE in representing spatial and depth-dependent local-scale pumping.

Impact of global-scale hydroclimatic patterns on surface water-groundwater interactions in the climatically vulnerable Ganges river delta of the Sundarbans

Kousik Das et al.

Summary: The impacts of El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole on groundwater quality in coastal aquifers were investigated, showing an increase in seawater salinity and a decline in groundwater level. Rainfall was found to be positively correlated with groundwater level, with El Nino potentially causing decreased rainfall, leading to declining groundwater levels and increased groundwater salinity.

Efficacy of machine learning techniques in predicting groundwater fluctuations in agro-ecological zones of India

Janaki B. Mohapatra et al.

Summary: Groundwater depletion poses a serious threat to humanity, especially in developing nations like India. This study used machine learning techniques to predict seasonal groundwater levels in different agro-ecological zones of India, with the DNN model showing the best performance in most areas. Strengthening groundwater monitoring networks and data acquisition systems is recommended for sustainable groundwater management.
