Synthesis of cyclohexylphenol via phenol hydroalkylation using Co2P/zeolite catalysts

S. Gutierrez-Rubio et al.

Summary: This paper reports a method for the synthesis of cyclohexylphenol using phenol as the only organic reactant and Co2P supported on different zeolites as catalysts. The highest yield and selectivity of cyclohexylphenol were obtained over the Co2P/Beta catalyst, which can be attributed to its three-dimensional microporosity, large external surface area, and highly dispersed nanoparticles.

Maximizing noble metal utilization in solid catalysts by control of nanoparticle location

Kang Cheng et al.

Summary: By rational arrangement of functional sites, the minimum loading of platinum can be reduced, enhancing the performance of catalysts. Deposition of trace amounts of platinum nanoparticles on the alumina binder or the outer surface of zeolite crystals increases selectivity and preserves the metal and acid functions.

Alkylation of lignin-derived aromatic oxygenates with cyclic alcohols on acidic zeolites

Yuanshuai Liu et al.

Summary: Moderately strong basic sites and spacious microporous environments play a crucial role in the efficient alkylation of phenols. Very strong basic sites can lead to catalyst deactivation. HBEA favors mono-alkylation while HY enhances di-alkylation. Dehydration of alcohols and alkylation compete at the beginning of the reaction. Carbenium ions are mainly produced from the adsorption and protonation of olefins. Maintaining a low alcohol concentration is necessary to avoid the formation of unreactive surface dimers and mitigate inhibitory effects on olefin adsorption and protonation during alkylation.

Mechanistic Investigations on the Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Lignin-Derived Monomers over Ru Catalysts: Theoretical and Kinetic Studies

Tufeil Sartaj Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetic and mechanistic aspects of the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) strategy for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of oxygenated compounds such as lignin-derived phenolics. By designing catalysts with low metal loading, mild reaction conditions, and high selectivity, high product yields were achieved. Using Ru/Al2O3-acidic catalyst, a 74% cyclohexanol yield from guaiacol was obtained at 225 degrees C, demonstrating the effectiveness of the CTH strategy for industrial applications.

Role of the ionic environment in enhancing the activity of reacting molecules in zeolite pores

Niklas Pfriem et al.

Summary: Tailoring the molecular environment around catalytically active sites enhances catalytic reactivity through the creation of an ionic environment in zeolites. The high local ionic strength induced by the aluminum concentration of zeolites stabilizes charged transition states, reducing energy barriers and increasing reaction rates.

Prediction of higher heating value (HHV) based on the structural composition for biomass

Yury Maksimuk et al.

Summary: Experimental determination of HHV, as well as various carbon, hydrogen, sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, ash, lignin and extractives contents in different samples, was conducted. Recommendations for HHV of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives for different types of biomass were made. Through analysis, two equations were proposed for predicting biomass HHV based on lignin and carbon contents with an error no worse than 2.7%.

Lignin-Based Additives for Improved Thermo-Oxidative Stability of Biolubricants

Monika A. Jedrzejczyk et al.

Summary: Biobased lubricants, such as vegetable oils, are environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based lubricants, but their lack of thermo-oxidative stability limits their applications. This study demonstrates the successful incorporation of lignin-based antioxidants in biolubricant formulations, improving their thermo-oxidative stability and lubricating properties.

Influence of Lewis acidity and CaCl2 on the direct transformation of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

B. Torres-Olea et al.

Summary: Nb-Zr oxides were evaluated for glucose dehydration to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The study showed a linear relationship between the amount of acid sites and niobium content. Nb2O5 demonstrated the highest acid concentration and surface area, with both Bronsted and Lewis acid sites, while Zr-containing catalysts mostly exhibited Lewis acid sites. The combination of CaCl2 and Zr-containing catalysts resulted in direct formation of HMF without fructose, in contrast to Nb2O5 which possesses both types of acid sites. A HMF yield of 44% was achieved with Nb3Zr7 as acid catalyst and CaCl2 after 90 minutes at 175°C, with the catalysts being reusable for at least 3 runs without pretreatment.
