Extended use and optimization of struvite in hydroponic cultivation systems

Veronica Arcas-Pilz et al.

Summary: Hydroponic systems are a popular form of urban agriculture due to their advantages in weight load, substrate conditions, and control of plant nutrition. This study investigates the use of struvite as a fertilizer in hydroponic systems and finds that it can sustain competitive production with lower environmental impacts, particularly in lettuce production.

Mapping direct N2O emissions from peri-urban agriculture: The case of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona

Angelica Mendoza Beltran et al.

Summary: This study uses geographically explicit datasets to investigate the factors influencing nitrous oxide emissions and their spatial distribution in peri-urban agriculture. The results show that crop-specific emission factors provide a more accurate estimate of emissions compared to the commonly used Tier 1 IPCC factors. The study also assesses the impact of soil types on emissions and discusses the implications of the findings for mitigation, sustainability, and circularity studies.

Recovered phosphorus for a more resilient urban agriculture: Assessment of the fertilizer potential of struvite in hydroponics

Veronica Arcas-Pilz et al.

Summary: This study assesses the feasibility of using struvite precipitated from an urban wastewater treatment plant as the unique source of P fertilizer for urban agriculture, finding that treatments with more than 5g of struvite per plant can increase yield and decrease P concentration in plant organs.

A Conceptual Framework for Incorporation of Composting in Closed-Loop Urban Controlled Environment Agriculture

Ajwal Dsouza et al.

Summary: Controlled environment agriculture plays a significant role in providing fresh and nutritious food in urban areas. Composting of biowaste allows for carbon dioxide and plant nutrient recovery, contributing to sustainable crop production systems. Challenges and potential solutions for resource recovery and reuse are discussed, as well as supplemental technologies to overcome operational obstacles.

The global rise of urban rooftop agriculture: A review of worldwide cases

Elisa Appolloni et al.

Summary: In the field of rooftop agriculture, North America has the highest percentage of cases, mainly focusing on open-air farms and gardens; commercial cases are relatively scarce, with most targeting social-educational goals or improving urban living quality; there are currently untapped business opportunities that, if developed, may help establish more sustainable and resilient city food systems.
