Ageing Workforces, Ill-health and Multi-state Labour Market Transitions

Mark N. Harris et al.

Summary: By studying retirement as a mobility between different labor states, we find that both ill-health and health shocks greatly increase the probability of leaving full-time employment for inactivity. Long-term health conditions have larger impacts compared to one-off health shocks, and accounting for individual effects and labor dynamic transitions is crucial for accurate estimation of the effects of health changes.

Expanding the Markov Chain Toolbox: Distributions of Occupation Times and Waiting Times

Christian Dudel

Summary: This article introduces new methods for calculating the distribution of occupation time, waiting time, and exit time in a subset of the state space of Markov chains. The research shows that the recent financial crisis has led to a considerable decrease in working life for Spanish males, predominantly due to changes in entry and exit times in the labor market, leading to an increase in inequality in working life duration.
