The robotic colorectal experience: an outcomes and learning curve analysis of 502 patients

Salvatore A. Parascandola et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 502 patients who underwent robotic colorectal surgery, with the most common procedures being anterior/low anterior resection, right hemicolectomy/ileocecectomy, and left hemicolectomy/sigmoidectomy. The operating time learning curve plateaued at 55-65 cases for anterior and low anterior resections and 35-45 cases for left hemicolectomy and sigmoidectomy.

Learning curve in robotic colorectal surgery

Yosef Nasseri et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 111 colorectal procedures performed robotically by an expert laparoscopic surgeon, identifying three distinct phases in the learning curve: learning, competence, and mastery. Results showed a significant decrease in surgeon console time and patient length of stay over the course of the study, with a trend towards reduced total operative time and postoperative complication rates. The findings contribute to the construction of a reliable learning curve for colorectal surgeons transitioning to robotics and may assist in guiding the training and credentialing of new robotic surgeons.
