Significant Structural Alterations and Functional Connectivity Alterations of Cerebellar Gray Matter in Patients With Somatic Symptom Disorder

Huai-Bin Liang et al.

Summary: This study found significant structural changes and changes in functional connectivity (FC) patterns in the posterior cerebellar lobe of patients with somatic symptom disorder (SSD). These findings provide new insights into the psychological and neural substrates of SSD and may serve as a potential treatment target.

A Longitudinal Study on Attenuated Structural Covariance in Patients With Somatic Symptom Disorder

Hye Youn Park et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with somatic symptom disorder (SSD) exhibit attenuated structural covariance, which may be related to dysfunctional brain networks and vulnerability to the disorder. Additionally, specific brain regions and networks were found to contribute to different phenotypic subtypes of SSD.

Reduced limbic microstructural integrity in functional neurological disorder

Ibai Diez et al.

Summary: In this study, differences in white matter integrity were observed between FND patients and healthy controls, with specific brain regions showing correlations with symptom severity, physical disability, and illness duration. These findings provide valuable insights into the neurocircuit pathways involved in the pathophysiology of FND, particularly related to salience, defensive behaviors, and emotion regulation.

Microglia in depression: current perspectives

Xiaoning Jia et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of microglia in the etiology of depression, discussing the dynamic states of microglia, the correlative and causal evidence of microglial abnormalities in depression, possible mechanisms of how microglia sense depression-related stress and modulate depression state, and how antidepressive therapies affect microglia. Understanding the role of microglia in depression may lead to new treatment strategies for fighting against this mental illness.

Structural neuroimaging of somatoform disorders: A systematic review

Maria Gloria Rossetti et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed at summarizing the existing evidence of structural brain alterations in somatoform disorders (SD) based on DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria. The results showed that compared to controls, subjects with SD exhibited morphological alterations in motor, limbic, and somatosensory circuits, suggesting selective changes in large-scale brain networks associated with cognitive control, emotion regulation, stress, and somatic-visceral perception. Further multimodal neuroimaging studies with longitudinal designs in larger and better-characterized samples are needed to elucidate the temporal and causal relationship between neuroanatomical changes and SD for informing tailored treatments.
