Review: Methanogens and methane production in the digestive systems of nonruminant farm animals

Summary: The study highlights the significant contribution of nonruminant animals to CH4 emissions, with the diversity and abundance of methanogens being associated with the formation of body fat in animals. Additionally, the findings suggest that inhibiting methanogens and promoting acetogenesis could be a promising approach to reduce methane emissions and improve animal production and environmental sustainability.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of methanogens in different mammalian species, finding that some animals harbor methanogens that are similar to those present in the human digestive tract. The results suggest that the methanogen community in certain animals domesticated by humans is fairly representative, and further studies are needed to understand the dynamics of methanogens in animals and the potential acquisition of methanogens in humans through direct contact with these animals or consumption of certain animals' meat and/or milk.

Summary: A 24-week rice bran dietary intervention significantly increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Lactobacillus in the intestines, promoting intestinal health. The study showed high retention and compliance rates without any adverse effects reported during the intervention. Further larger-scale studies with longer intervention durations and multiple follow-up outcome assessments are recommended.
