Insects in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) diets - comparison between full-fat, defatted, and de-chitinised meals, and oil and exoskeleton fractions

P. Weththasinghe et al.

Summary: In the study, full-fat and de-chitinised black soldier fly larvae meals negatively impacted the physical quality of feed pellets for Atlantic salmon. However, these meals improved the growth rate of salmon. The defatted meal, oil, and exoskeleton supported similar growth performance as the control.

The first insight into black soldier fly meal in brown trout nutrition as an environmentally sustainable fish meal replacement

Z. Mikolajczak et al.

Summary: Insect meals are considered promising feed materials in fish nutrition due to their sustainability. This study applied full-fat black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal in brown trout diets and demonstrated its environmental sustainability. The results showed that up to 20% of BSFL full-fat meal has high potential in brown trout diets.

Comparison of new and conventional processing methods for their effects on physical properties of fish feed

Keshun Liu et al.

Summary: Aquafeed produced by high-moisture extrusion with a twin-screw extruder and a specially designed cooling die showed softer texture, durability, and high water stability without the need for starch or other binders. Compared to conventional low-moisture extrusion, the new process resulted in less expansion and porosity in the feed, leading to significantly reduced oil absorption capacity.

Physiological responses of Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) juveniles fed on full-fat insect-based diet in an aquaponic system

Matteo Zarantoniello et al.

Summary: The study represents the first comprehensive research on the physiological effects of using Black Soldier Fly meal as feed for sturgeon in an aquaponic system. The results showed that sturgeon fed with a diet containing 50% Black Soldier Fly meal had lower feed acceptance, resulting in reduced growth and survival rates, decreased liver lipids and glycogen content, increased hepatic hsp70.1 gene expression, and worsened gut histological morphometric parameters during the 60-day feeding trial.

Summary: Through a global sampling approach, this study assessed the plastic content and composition in commercial fishmeal products, revealing a wide range of plastics content in different products from various countries. The results indicate that certain fishmeal products have higher levels of plastics, posing a higher plastic intake risk for carnivorous fish species consuming them.

Black Soldier Fly Full-Fat Larvae Meal Is More Profitable Than Fish Meal and Fish Oil in Siberian Sturgeon Farming: The Effects on Aquaculture Sustainability, Economy and Fish GIT Development

Mateusz Rawski et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of black soldier fly full-fat larvae meal (BSFL) on the environmental and economic aspects of Siberian sturgeon nutrition, finding the optimal incorporation levels at 10% and 15%. BSFL positively affected feed efficiency ratio and usage of FM and FO, while also improving gastrointestinal tract development. Overall, BSFL showed high sustainability and favorable economics as a functional material in Siberian sturgeon diets.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Lilianna Hoffmann et al.

Summary: Insect meals, specifically mealworms, are a promising and sustainable source of nutrients for aquafeeds. The study found that using 10% mealworm meal in sea trout fingerling diets resulted in the most satisfactory growth performance. Higher doses of mealworm meal did not negatively impact growth performance, feed utilization, fish health, or survival rates.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different protein sources on rainbow trout, finding that the H10P50 mixture had the best growth performance. The protein sources H, P, and H10P50 partially restored microbiota diversity and did not compromise gut barrier function or induce inflammation. These protein sources appear to be valid options for fishmeal-free aquafeeds.
