Microstructures and properties of CrxFeNi(3-x)Al high-entropy alloys

Wen Zhang et al.

Summary: A set of Co-free high-entropy alloys with different compositions were fabricated and their solidification microstructures and compression properties were investigated. Different solidification microstructures were observed for different compositions, and the distribution of different phases in the alloys was studied. The strength of the alloys initially decreased and then increased with increasing Cr content, and the rise in strength was mainly attributed to solid solution strengthening, fine crystal strengthening, and precipitation of a certain phase.

Effect of machining processes on the damage response and surface quality of open hole hybrid carbon/flax composites: An experimental study

Braedon Hoekstra et al.

Summary: The influence of conventional drilling and abrasive water jet machining on the mechanical behavior of hybrid carbon/flax composites was studied. It was found that abrasive water jet machining caused severe damage on the hole surface, including peel-up, push-out, and secondary delamination, while conventional drilling only caused push-out delamination. A delamination factor was developed to quantify the delamination at the hole surface. The study revealed that the unidirectional and angle-ply specimens drilled with abrasive water jet machining accumulated more damage compared to conventional drilling specimens.

Practicalities of BVID detection on aerospace-grade CFRP materials with optical fibre sensors

Sidney Goossens et al.

Summary: Recent reports have demonstrated the capability of optical fibre sensors in detecting barely visible impact damage on CFRP laminates. However, little attention has been previously paid to the practicality of this method in realistic ambient conditions or the detection range. This study attempts to derive BVID detection thresholds for fibre Bragg grating-based sensors in aerospace applications, and provides commendable sizes for the detection range on different material systems.

Damage detection in composite aircraft wing-like test-box using distributed fiber optic sensors

Amitabha Datta et al.

Summary: Structural Health Monitoring Systems for aircraft structures aim to detect damage with minimum downtime by using a distributed fiber optic sensor system. This system can effectively detect the location and size of damage through monitoring localized strain changes. The damage severity can be determined by calculating a damage index based on the strain difference of all sensors.

Dynamic Performance Detection of CFRP Composite Pipes based on Quasi-Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Techniques

Hua-Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite pipes, known for their high strength and corrosion resistance, are used to transfer gases and oils in subsea environments. Developing quasi-distributed optical fiber sensing techniques based on multiple configurations of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) elements allows for precise structural monitoring of the pipes. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed sensing technique in vibration analysis and monitoring the health of CFRP composite pipes in operation.
