A Review on Aging, Sarcopenia, Falls, and Resistance Training in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Filipe Rodrigues et al.

Summary: As aging population increases, sarcopenia and fall risk become public health concerns. Falls are linked to reduced functionality, increased morbidity and mortality. Treating fall-related injuries is costly. Active lifestyle is crucial in reducing falls. Given the importance of muscle mass, strength, bone density, and cartilage function, resistance training positively impacts the elderly. This review examined the evidence on resistance training methods for the elderly to reduce falls and their consequences.

Importance of TP53 codon 72 and intron 3 duplication 16 bp polymorphisms and their haplotypes in susceptibility to sarcopenia in Iranian older adults

Nima Montazeri-Najafabady et al.

Summary: This study found that the Arg/Pro genotype and Arginine-Insertion and Proline-Insertion haplotypes of the TP53 gene may decrease the risk of sarcopenia in older adults in Iran. There were significant differences in muscle mass, body composition, and biochemical parameters between different genotypes and haplotypes.

A Novel Fortified Dairy Product and Sarcopenia Measures in Sarcopenic Older Adults: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

Nasrin Nasimi et al.

Summary: The study showed that daily consumption of fortified yogurt with HMB, vitamin D, and C can improve muscle strength and gait speed, increase levels of vitamin D and IGF-1, prevent inflammation, and enhance quality of life in sarcopenic older adults. The results suggest that specific nutritional interventions alone could be beneficial, especially for individuals who are unable to exercise.

External fixator combined with three different fixation methods of fibula for treatment of extra-articular open fractures of distal tibia and fibula: a retrospective study

Dong-Dong Sun et al.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of three different fixation methods for the treatment of extra-articular open fractures of distal tibia and fibula, and found that external fixator combined with Kirschner wire intramedullary fixation shortened operative time and fracture healing time, reduced costs and complications of fracture healing. However, there were no differences in blood loss, infection complications, and ankle function recovery compared with the other two groups.

Development and validation of a short version of the Sarcopenia Quality of Life questionnaire: the SF-SarQoL

A. Geerinck et al.

Summary: The study aimed to reduce the number of items in the SarQoL questionnaire for measuring quality of life in sarcopenia, resulting in a new 14-item short form (SF-SarQoL) with good clinimetric properties. The SF-SarQoL showed discriminative power, internal consistency, reliability, and a unidimensional model fit, indicating its effectiveness in assessing quality of life in older adults with sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia quality-of-life questionnaire (SarQoL)®: translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation in Turkish

Tugba Erdogan et al.

Summary: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Turkish version of the SarQoL (R) questionnaire demonstrated good discriminative power, high internal consistency, consistent construct validity, excellent test-retest reliability, and no floor/ceiling effect. This validation paves the way for confidently using the SarQoL (R) tool in eastern populations.
