Deformation twinning during high temperature compression tests of the Ni-base superalloy ATI 718Plus®

Christiane Kienl et al.

Summary: This study discusses the deformation mechanisms during high temperature compression tests of the Ni-base superalloy ATI 718Plus (R). Deformation twins were observed in deformed grains at various temperatures and strain rates using transmission electron microscopes (TEM). The low stacking fault energy of the alloy was found to cause the formation of deformation twins. Additionally, early stages of twin formation were captured, including emission of twinning partials from grain boundaries and the formation of partials through cross-slip events.

The Effect of Grain Boundary Carbides on Dynamic Recrystallization During Hot Compression of Ni-Based Superalloy Haynes 282™

Emil Eriksson et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of grain boundary carbides on dynamic recrystallization during hot compression of Ni-base superalloy Haynes 282, and indicates that carbides do not significantly influence the process. The carbide solvus temperature is not a critical limit during thermomechanical processes as well.

Unusual substructure evolution and post-dynamic recrystallization effects on flow softening mechanism in a ?'-free Co-base superalloy

Abhinav Kumar Karnati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the substructural evolution during hot compression of Co-22Cr-22Ni-14W-2Fe-0.1C superalloy and found the absence of any previous report on stacking fault energy (SFE) estimate and post-dynamic recrystallization (PDRX) effects at temperatures > 1000 °C. The results showed that continuous dynamic recrystallization is the dominant flow softening mechanism in low SFE alloy, while the presence of higher stored energy and recrystallized nuclei triggered significant increases in the recrystallized fraction at 1100 °C.

Hot Deformation Behavior and Dynamic Recrystallization Nucleation Mechanisms of Inconel 625 during Hot Compressive Deformation

Zhi Jia et al.

Summary: The high-temperature compression deformation behavior of Inconel 625 alloy was investigated through hot compression tests, revealing that the optimum condition for plastic deformation is at temperatures higher than 1050 degrees C with a strain rate of 1 to 10 s(-1). The characterization of hot compression microstructure evolution using EBSD and TEM techniques showed different dynamic recrystallization mechanisms under varying compression deformation conditions, with CDRX dominating at lower temperatures and DDRX with a bulging boundary induced by twinning dominating at higher temperatures. These findings provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the thermoplastic processing of nickel-based superalloys.

Adaptive domain misorientation approach for the EBSD measurement of deformation induced dislocation sub-structures

Pauli Lehto

Summary: A novel domain misorientation approach is introduced in the current work, which can resolve sub-grains and dislocation cells using conventional EBSD, leading to an increase in level of detail resolved. The method grows measurement domains radially until a specified misorientation value has been reached, enabling local misorientation analysis within individual sub-grains and dislocation cells. Sub-structural boundaries are classified based on the total misorientation, with thickness ranging from approximately one hundred nanometres to several hundred nanometres.

Dynamic and Post-Dynamic Recrystallization of Haynes 282 below the Secondary Carbide Solvus

Emil Eriksson et al.

Summary: The study focused on the effect of process parameters on dynamic and post-dynamic recrystallization during hot compression of Ni-base superalloy Haynes 282, with strain rate identified as the governing factor. During a 90-second post-deformation hold, significant changes in microstructure were observed, including grain growth and an increasing fraction of twin boundaries.

Analysis of strain-induced precipitates by delta-processing in Inconel 718 superalloy

Pedro Jacinto Paramo-Kanetas et al.

Summary: Delta-Processing is used to control grain growth during hot deformation of the Ni-base superalloy Inconel 718. This study investigates the precipitation of M23C6 carbides and their interaction with recrystallization phenomena after the alloy has been saturated with delta-phase. Double-strain hot compression tests were conducted to analyze the softening/hardening progress over time, with microstructural characterization using SEM and XRD to identify precipitating/dissolving phases.
